The night wind was harsh on my cars. My left ear particularly couldn’t tolerate such strong winds.
I gripped my car tightly, noticing from the corner of my eye the window slowly closing.
“Where do you live?” Nathan asked.
Half an hour later, the car finally stopped.
“Thanks,” I said softly, still experiencing some ringing in my ear.
Nathan’s mouth moved, but I couldn’t hear him. I could only make out that it wasn’t anything pleasant.
“I’m going now,” I said.
The dark apartment held no trace of Ethan. I didn’t have many friends–most were Ethan’s.
For a long time, I’d been dependent on Ethan, terrified of suddenly losing contact with him.
That night, I saw one of his friends post a photo that revealed half of a man’s arm and a woman’s silhouette.
It was Ethan–I recognized the watch on his wrist. I’d spent several months‘ salary on it.
Like someone who couldn’t accept reality, I frantically video–called Ethan until he finally replied:
“Amy, I’m still busy. I’ll be back soon.”
I paused. “Ethan, I want to see you.”
A few minutes later, I received a photo from Ethan.
It had exactly the same background as the other picture. Ethan really was with Sophia.
Yet he still tried to placate me, saying he missed me and would be back soon.
Ethan never asked how I got home. He seemed to be perfunctorily ending the conversation, so I went along with it, using fatigue as an excuse.
Early the next morning, I received flowers from Ethan, along with him delivering them personally to win me over.
He handed me a note filled with apologies and declarations of love.
His eyes were sincere, making me forget who he really was.
Ethan was no good person. He was extremely cruel. I once witnessed him deliberately breaking someone’s leg simply because they had touched his jacket.
Over the years, perhaps out of guilt, Ethan had been very gentle with me.

Chapter 3
“Amy, I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”
I felt dazed. Ethan had made this promise too many times, always breaking it.
“Ethan, let’s break up,” I said, looking up.
He seemed incredulous. He held me tight, pressing against my ear.
“Amy, you must not have heard me clearly.”
“Amy, it won’t happen again. Ever.”
He didn’t know that morning I’d received an anonymous message with photos of him and Sophia entering a hotel.
During those few hours after abandoning me, Ethan had been with Sophia.
“Ethan, I’m serious. I’m moving out today.”
Ethan frowned, his patience clearly exhausted.
“Amy, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
I chased after Ethan for a year. That year, I often stayed late just to see him.
He frequently skipped classes, preferring to hang out in those alleys.
Ethan never ate breakfast, so for a while, I’d get up early to bring him some, claiming it was to repay him for saving
- me.
I watched Ethan wrap his arm around different girls in front of me, introducing me as his sister.
But eventually, I became official. After his last breakup, he got completely drunk and vowed to study hard.
That same night, he exposed my feelings.
“Amy, do you like me?” he asked.
A girl’s cherished secret revealed, I shyly lowered my head.
With alcohol on his breath, he said, “Amy, be with me.”
From then on, I became his girlfriend.
After that, Ethan actually started studying hard.
My hearing wasn’t good, so for everything Ethan told me, he would write it down on paper.
He said, “Amy, I’ll be your ears.”
Since then, I never told him there were times I could hear.
