“Amy, my friend needs me for something. You should head back first,”
Just like that, he abandoned me on a deserted highway,
“Ethan!” I called after him.
The only response was the roar of his motorcycle. I knew that caller was Sophia.
“She could never compare to Sophia.”
I remembered Ethan’s words and hated that I could hear them.
The wind was bitterly cold, and even Uber was scarce at this hour. My calls to Ethan never go answered.
Ethan had never been like this before. Around me, he’d always played the part of the attentive boyfriend.
But behind my back, I’d more than once overheard conversations between him and his friends.
He never seemed to realize that when those words left his mouth, my expression would turn hesitant and shocked.
That night, I didn’t wait for Ethan to return, but I did see a photo of him with Sophia.
Posted and then quickly deleted. When I refreshed, the picture was gone.
But I could never forget seeing Ethan’s silhouette in the background of Sophia’s selfie.
A distant light caught my attention. I blinked, realizing a man was standing in front of me.
“Amy? What are you doing out here?”
Moving closer, I recognized him as Nathan, Ethan’s high school rival.
He looked me up and down, his lips curling into a slight smile.
Once again, my vulnerability was on display before him. He gestured for me to come over.
“Get in. I’ll be a good guy today.”
Nathan’s car always had a distinctive fresh scent. I lowered my head, constantly refreshing Ethan’s social media until it showed nothing but a dash.
Ethan was the showy type who loved to flaunt. During our years together, he’d always post about me, constantly calling me “my Amy.” Now I realized those posts were only visible to me.
“Did Ethan abandon you again?” Nathan asked.
“How many times is this now, Amy?” Nathan asked at a red light, finally glancing my way.

Chapter 2
I couldn’t even remember how many times, but Nathan said:
“That’s the third time in front of me, Amy,”
So it had happened three times already. I remembered now. In high school, Ethan said he’d walk me home, but changed his mind after receiving a phone call.
He said he had unfinished business, but that day after school, those thugs cornered me at the gate.
Unable to find Ethan, they took their anger out on me. It’s Nathan who saved me.
With a lollipop in his mouth, he effortlessly brought those guys down. Then he glanced at me disdainfully.
“Is that how that loser Ethan protects his girlfriend?”
I looked at him, carefully reading his lips.
Oh, he was talking about Ethan. I struggled to stand up.
“Don’t talk about him like that. Ethan just had something come up.”
Nathan laughed dismissively and tossed me his jacket.
“Put it on, or Ethan might think I’m the one who beat you up.”
The second time was when I won a math competition and wanted to celebrate with him. But Ethan never showed up, even until the restaurant closed.
His phone went unanswered all night. I sat in front of that restaurant until, unexpectedly, Nathan appeared.
“Abandoned again?” he asked with that same mocking tone.
Back then, I couldn’t stand Nathan. He was Ethan’s archenemy–rumors said Ethan had stolen Nathan’s girlfriend, starting their rivalry. Ethan was the well–known troublemaker who relied on his family background and never studied, while Nathan was similar yet different–carefree and seemingly indifferent to everything.
Even now, Nathan wore that same mischievous smile. “Amy, aren’t you leaving yet?”
