Chapter 7
Cassian wandered through the crowd, lost and confused.
He kept circling back, but deep down he knew-
I’d really left without a word.
Maybe to him, it just looked like I went home heartbroken.
That place still held the echoes of us.
Without hesitation, Cassian rushed home..
The biting northern wind howled past his ears.
His already scrambled thoughts were interrupted again-
His phone was ringing.
It was Elowen.
Of course.
She never took no for an answer.
But at that moment, Cassian had room in his heart for just one person.
And it wasn’t her.
The memories came crashing down-
It was spring, cottonwood fluff in the air.
I was coughing like crazy from allergies, but didn’t dare take medicine.
I was pregnant.
On the way to the hospital, a call stopped me in my tracks.
She said she might not make it through the night.
I weighed the choices-
And went to see Elowen for a “final goodbye.”
Then there was that morning frost on the windowpane.
Cassian and I watched golden leaves fall from the sycamore.

I told him I wanted to make a painting with those leaves-
A gift for our baby.
Too bad that baby never got the chance to receive it.
He knew how much I had suffered.
But only now did it hit him.
Elowen’s calls came one after another, each more desperate.
Cassian finally picked up.
“Elowen, don’t you have anyone else in your life?
If you’re so sick, maybe be with your family for once.”
Silence.
For the first time, she didn’t talk back.
Cassian froze.
The lie was unraveling.
The fog in his mind finally lifted.
All this time he’d doubted me.
Turns out, it was the girl he trusted most who was lying.
Lying so easily, even dragging life and death into it.
Well-
Liars always play dirty.
Cassian hung up without a second thought.
He rushed home.
But by then, he meant nothing to me.
I flagged down a cab.
The driver was kind enough to load my suitcase for me.
Just as I stepped into the car,
A figure rushed past me in a blur.

I rolled up the window and turned my head.
It was Cassian.
He was sprinting toward the house, panic in every step.
Too little, too late.
I’m no longer the girl who waited around to be hurt.
I leaned against the car door,
Watching the world pass me by.
The rows of poplar trees zipped past the window.
No more spring fluff in the air.
For the first time in ages,
I could finally breathe.
When you lay down the weight crushing your chest,
You’re free to climb even higher.
Cassian pushed open the front door.
The silence hit him like a slap.
That was the goodbye I left him.
He stood there, eyes darting.
He turned on every single light.
The warm glow washed over his face-
But all he felt was ice.
Somewhere in the room, soft sobs echoed.
“Men don’t cry“?
Tell that to someone who’s never been broken.
Cassian slumped over the dining table.
There was still a vase of lavender from a few days ago.
Without me there, it was already starting to wilt.

He gently touched one of the petals.
No scent left.
Maybe there never would be again.
