Chapter 4
He didn’t come in. Just stood there, looking at me.
Then he pulled something from his pocket–a tiny baby rattle, barely bigger than his palm.
“I saw this at the mall today. I thought… our baby would’ve liked it.”
That one sentence shattered all the strength I had left.
I took the rattle and slammed the door shut, locking it behind me.
Then I slid down to the floor and cried without making a sound.
Why is it that people only realize they love something after they’ve lost it?
Why does he give me the faintest glimmer of hope… right when I’ve finally decided to let go?
The rattle slipped from my hand and hit the floor with a soft jingle.
I sat there all night.
The next morning, I left right on time.
As soon as I got in the car, my phone rang–it was the hospital.
They said I’d left behind the miscarriage report and needed to come pick it up.
I never had the courage to open it before. I’d shoved it aside like an ostrich hiding its head.
Like if I didn’t look at it, none of it really happened.
But today, it was time to face the truth.
At 9 a.m., Cassian was late.
He looked like he hadn’t slept all night–his eyes bloodshot and hollow.
When he saw me, disappointment flickered across his face.
“I thought… maybe you wouldn’t show.”
I didn’t answer. Just walked past him and into the building.
How could I not show up?
We’d both waited too long for this day.
Right before signing, Cassian hesitated.

Pen in hand, frozen.
The clerk gave a sympathetic smile.
“If the gentleman isn’t sure, maybe it’s better to wait.”
I gave a cold laugh.
If he wasn’t sure, he wouldn’t have asked for a divorce a hundred damn times.
Cassian turned to me and whispered,
“Seraphina, once the wedding’s over… we’ll get back together, okay?”
I nodded, saying nothing.
He’d lied to me so many times.
This time, I’d lie to him.
When the divorce papers were in hand, Cassian’s heart pounded.
Something felt… wrong.
Like he’d just lost something he’d never get back.
We walked outside. Elowen was already there.
She wore a bright yellow sundress–no trace of illness anywhere.
I turned my head toward Cassian.
“She’s waiting.”
He gave an awkward “yeah,” but didn’t look happy to see her.
Elowen walked over, all smiles, and pulled a wedding invite from her purse.
“Seraphina, Cassian and I talked about it.”
“We’d still love for you and the baby to come to the wedding.”
“This is for you.”
I almost told her there wasn’t a baby anymore. That I wouldn’t be attending.
But then I saw the nervous twitch in Cassian’s face.
Whatever.
We’re divorced now. What’s the point of saying anything?

I shook my head and started to walk away,
Then–bang!
A couple bumped into me, and my bag spilled open.
Cassian’s eyes widened in panic. He rushed to my side.
“Are you okay? Does your stomach hurt? Is the baby-”
His words cut off.
The man standing beside us had picked up a piece of paper from the ground.
The miscarriage report.
