Chapter 2
Chapter 2
The memories stopped there.
Cassian nudged my shoulder.
His voice was flat.
“Don’t forget the divorce tomorrow.
No more pretending to be sick.”
I blinked.
It all came rushing back.
Three days after the miscarriage,
he’d called.
The only time.
Outside the clerk’s office.
I’d just finished an all–night IV drip.
My body was wrecked.
I accidentally put the call on speaker.
His voice filled the whole hospital room-
sharp and impatient.
“Seraphina, seriously?
It’s already noon.
We agreed on nine.
What excuse this time?”
I could feel everyone staring.
Nurses, patients-
pity in their eyes.
I forced out the words:

Chapter 2
“I’m at the hospital.”
Silence.
Then a scoff.
“Cut the crap.
One last chance.
Next Wednesday, clerk’s office.”
Click.
The nurse didn’t say anything.
Just walked out quietly.
The door shut with a finality that crushed what was left of my dignity.
That was the moment I realized-
the most painful thing in the world
isn’t being hurt by someone you love.
It’s when they hurt you
and strangers feel sorry for you.
I shut my eyes.
Shoved the memories away.
“Fine.”
Cassian raised a brow.
“After the divorce, just stay home and take care of the baby.
Don’t bother me unless it’s urgent.”
“Fine.”
Maybe I said it too quickly.
He looked surprised.
He let go of Elowen’s hand
and glanced at my stomach.

Chapter 2
“How’s the baby?
Behaving lately?”
My eyes burned.
I had to swallow hard not to break.
“Very.
Really well–behaved.”
So well–behaved,
it left without making me suffer too long.
I turned to leave,
afraid I’d break down if I stayed another second.
As we brushed past each other,
I noticed the lipstick stain on his collar.
Same color Elowen was wearing.
Sáme shade as the blood
on the parking garage floor.
On my way out,
I passed a baby store.
A clerk waved me down.
“Hi, Seraphina!
Your order’s in!
Want to pick it up today?”
I almost said no.
But my eyes caught the poster-
a giggling baby in a yellow onesie.
If our baby had made it,
would they have been that adorable too?

Chapter Z
While I stood there, dazed,
the clerk bagged the outfit and handed it to me.
A pale yellow newborn romper.
Cassian’s favorite color.
I stared at it,
then bolted.
Slammed the car door.
And finally,
let myself cry.
You’d be surprised how quietly a mother can cry
after losing her child.
Now,
I know.
