Chapter 1
Chapter 1
It was the seventh day after my miscarriage
when I ran into Cassian at the mall.
He was carrying shopping bags,
his eyes soft as silk when they landed on Elowen.
But when he saw me,
his face changed.
He frowned instantly.
“What are you doing here?
Didn’t we agree to finalize the divorce first?
Or are you having second thoughts?”
His eyes were cold, sharp.
I could feel them slice through me.
Elowen gave him a playful scold,
then turned to me with an apologetic smile.
“Don’t misunderstand, Seraphina.
Cassian’s just really eager to marry me.”
She let her gaze fall to my stomach,
smirking.
“Our wedding’s next week.
You and the baby are welcome to come.”
My hand instinctively moved to my belly,
but before I could say a word, Cassian cut in.
“She’s pregnant.
She shouldn’t be attending weddings.

What if something happens?
It’s bad luck.”
My fingers froze.
Once again.
I was stunned by how cruel he could be.
Elowen having terminal cancer?
Not bad luck.
You living in the hospital for her?
Not bad luck.
Me, carrying your child?
Suddenly, I’m bad luck.
How ironic.
But then again-
I’m not Elowen.
Why would you care?
You knew I was fighting to save the baby.
You just… never showed up.
If you’d asked,
just once,
you would’ve known-
Our baby didn’t make it.
I said nothing.
Cassian didn’t seem to care.
He leaned toward Elowen,
talking about wedding details like I wasn’t even there.
I watched them quietly,

a montage playing in my head
Cassian had changed the day Elowen was diagnosed.
He stopped asking about the baby.
Stopped coming home.
Started vanishing for days.
At first, he said:
“Seraphina, she’s really sick.
I have to be there for her.
Don’t worry,
it’s just sympathy.”
Later, he said:
“Seraphina, her last wish is to marry me.
I don’t want her to die with regrets.”
I knew what he wasn’t saying.
But I didn’t want to understand.
He dropped those hints ninety–nine times.
I gave him ninety–nine excuses.
Said no ninety–nine times.
Until the hundredth.
He didn’t hint anymore.
That day,
I had just gotten my thirty–second injection to prevent a miscarriage.
I’d barely left the hospital when I got his text:
“9AM, Wednesday. County Clerk’s Office. Divorce.”
No “how are you.”
No “I’m sorry.”

Chapter 1
Just a cold, sixteen word sentence that sent me spiraling.
1 collapsed in the parking garage.
Called him over and over.
But the only one who answered
was the 911 dispatcher.
Later, the doctor told me:
“The baby couldn’t be saved.”
I laid in that hospital bed,
waiting from sunset to sunrise.
Finally,
a message came in from Cassian:
“Stop calling. Your ringtone’s annoying.”
I stared at the screen,
my lips bleeding from how hard I was biting them.
Cassian,
you got your wish.
We’re done.
I hope you enjoy your perfect ending.
