Chapter 4
The day I was discharged from the hospital, I quietly packed my things without notifying Jake.
My phone screen lit up with his message:
[Picked up an extra shift today. Coming home late.]
I laughed bitterly, tossing the phone into my bag. Extra shift? More like sitting in his luxurious
corner office.
Suddenly, a profile picture I hadn’t seen in ages flashed on my screen with an incoming message:
[Want to know Jake’s secrets?]
It was Vanessa.
My former nemesis who had laughed the loudest when my family crumbled, who had kicked us
while we were down.
I should have deleted the message immediately, but my fingers seemed to have a mind of their own
as I replied:
[When and where.]
Vanessa stared at my pregnant belly with a venomous smile. “Olivia Maxwell, you’re truly pathetic!”
She leaned forward, her overpowering perfume making me nauseous. “How are you still competing with me? Fooled twice by the same man and still shameless enough to carry his child?”
I fought the urge to throw my coffee in her face. “What exactly do you want to tell me?”
She pointed to a corner. “I’ve arranged to meet Jake. Hide in that closet, and I guarantee you’ll hear the most illuminating truth of your life.”
I hadn’t been hidden in the closet long when Jake arrived.
He barely glanced at her, his tone frigid: “What do you want?”
Vanessa clicked over in her stilettos and suddenly grabbed his tie. “Just wondering why my fiancé

secretly married that worthless bitch.”
Jake’s expression darkened as he roughly seized her wrist. His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper, “You’re crossing a line.”
Vanessa suddenly burst into shrill laughter.
“Crossing a line? Was the engagement your father arranged for us just meaningless words?” She
violently yanked her collar aside, revealing bruises below her collarbone.
“You certainly weren’t talking about ‘lines‘ in my bed last night!”
Jake narrowed his eyes and said: “It’s nothing but a debt I’m repaying. I don’t love her–so why are you throwing this tantrum?”
“You don’t love her?”
Jake let out a soft laugh: “She’s just a game to me. If I truly loved her, would I have betrayed her
family’s secrets to my father? Would I have stood by while she was dragged to that filthy nightclub?”
He paused: “Everyone in our circle plays these games. Don’t worry, I’ll clean things up before our wedding date.”
I pressed my hand against my mouth so hard, desperate to scream out.
“Then why marry her at all? Why rescue her from that hellhole and clear her debts?”
“Because watching her suffer is… interesting.”
Jake laughed coldly, “Don’t you find it thrilling to watch her fall in love with me all over again?”
His voice carried a sadistic pleasure. “Seeing her memory shattered, trailing after me like a broken, desperate dog–waking up every morning terrified that today might be the day I abandon her. Tell me that isn’t interesting.”
Vanessa suddenly straddled his lap, her crimson lips pressing against his Adam’s apple: “My, what a cold heart you have, Mr. Landry~”
She deliberately faced the closet door, teasing Jake with slow, deliberate movements.
Jake gripped the back of her head and pulled her into a deep kiss.

“Mmm, Jake…”
Vanessa intentionally released breathy, suggestive moans, his fingers digging into her waist while his palm traced intimate patterns along her waist.
The wet, obscene sounds of their kissing seemed unnaturally loud in the quiet room.
My heart constricted painfully in the closet.
So it was all… a lie.
Even knowing about my memory loss, he still wouldn’t let me go.
Playing the penniless boyfriend? Acting the devoted lover?
He pretended to spend his last dollar, cramming us into that tiny 300–square–foot apartment, making me believe we were two unfortunate souls clinging to each other against the world.
Watching me wake screaming from nightmares, huddled in corners, trembling and sobbing;
Watching me clumsily learn to cook, burning my fingers yet still smiling at him, insisting “it doesn’t
hurt“.
And worst of all, watching me fall for him again, piece by broken piece, helplessly tumbling back
into the abyss.
God, I was such a fool!
A sudden, searing pain tore through my abdomen as warm liquid streamed down my thighs.
I bit my lip hard, but still couldn’t suppress a whimper.
My consciousness began to blur around the edges.
Jake heard me. The closet door flew open violently.
His eyes locked onto the pool of blood beneath me, and he froze as if struck by lightning, his breathing actually stopping for a heartbeat.
Then, he completely lost it.
“Olivia!”

He scooped up my blood–soaked body and bolted for the door, his voice cracking with terror:
“Help! Somebody helps us!”
Jake, what’s your hurry? Isn’t this pathetic state of mine exactly what you find most interesting?
