Chapter 2
Four years of marriage, and I never truly saw the man sharing my bed. I’d been living in a fantasy he’d carefully constructed around me.
Under the guise of salvation, he was the very one who had pushed me into that living hell.
n my dazed state, I don’t remember how I got out of there. When I regained some awareness, I
ound myself wandering the streets.
After stumbling around for God knows how long, I collapsed on the sidewalk.
As consciousness slipped away, I felt an unexpected flicker of relief.
When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed.
ake’s eyes were bloodshot, his voice breaking:
Doctor! Doctor! How’s my wife?”
He was clutching the doctor’s white coat.
Is she going to be okay? What about the baby? Please tell me the baby’s alright!” His eyes were so ed they looked hemorrhaged, his entire body shaking like he might fall apart at any second.
The doctor frowned at being manhandled but remained patient:
Mr. Landry, please try to calm down. Your wife just fainted from emotional distress. The baby is perfectly healthy. There’s nothing to worry about.”
But Jake wasn’t processing a word.
“That’s bullshit! Did you see how pale she was? Check again! Please, just… check again…”
His voice cracked like thin ice, tears hitting the floor in heavy drops.
When he finally saw my eyes open, he practically dove toward the bed.
Looking at his completely unraveled state, I wondered if everything I’d witnessed earlier had been a
dream.

Chapter 2
“Baby, thank God you’re awake! You scared me half to death! What were you thinking, wandering around in the middle of the night? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was? What if something happened to you or the baby? I couldn’t bear it…”
His eyes were raw from crying as he pulled me against his chest so tightly I could barely breathe.
I could feel his heart hammering wildly against his ribcage like it might explode.
“You have no idea how terrified I was when I couldn’t find you.”
But I felt nothing–no warmth, no comfort–just an icy void spreading through my bones as silent
tears slid down my face.
He panicked at my tears, frantically trying to wipe them away, his fingertips ghosting over my cheeks as if I were made of glass.
“What’s wrong? You’re scaring me. Did something happen?”
He’d always crumbled at my tears–one drop, and he’d move mountains for me.
“I just… remembered those things again. Had a bit of a meltdown, that’s all.”
Jake’s pupils contracted sharply, all color draining from his face in an instant.
His hands trembled as he took mine, pressing them to his lips with a bitter smile.
“Sweetheart, that’s all behind us now. We’re good now, aren’t we?”
His other hand gently rested on my belly.
“Even the little one wants mommy to be happy.”
His forehead pressed against my hand like a devout worshipper.
“Please try to forget, okay? I’m begging you. I absolutely cannot lose you two…”
Looking at his red–rimmed eyes, witnessing his panic–stricken state, I felt a crushing pain in my chest that made it hard to breathe.
He played his part so convincingly.
As if he truly loved me to his very core.

Chapter 2
I clutched the edge of the bedsheet, my fingertips trembling slightly as I finally spoke:
“Jake… is there something you’re not telling me?”
Jake hesitated for just a heartbeat before tenderly ruffling my hair.
“Look at you, about to be a mom and still letting your imagination run wild.”
His voice was honey–sweet: “Are those pregnancy hormones making you paranoid, sweetheart?”
I searched his eyes intently, desperate to find even a flicker of deception.
But all I could see was genuine concern.
Jake leaned down to press a soft kiss to my forehead. “Don’t overthink things. I would never lie to
you.”
My throat tightened painfully as my lips trembled, words failing me completely.
I could hardly believe that this man–the husband who’d slept beside me night after night–could possibly be… him.
My mind drifted back to that night I found a man lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk, his white shirt stained beyond recognition.
The doctor said five more minutes, and he wouldn’t have survived.
When he finally regained consciousness, he gave me a weak smile, revealing two adorable canine
eeth.
“Thank you… I’m… I’m Chris…” He explained his parents had died early, and he’d been beaten like his for refusing to pay protection money to local thugs.
I was laughably naive back then. Feeling sorry for him, I offered him a job as my assistant.
Chris proved incredibly competent–flawless in business negotiations and creating proposals that mpressed even our most critical board members.”
Unwilling to let such talent go to waste, I introduced him to my father.
Dad entrusted him with significant responsibilities, and he executed each task with near perfection.

Chapter 2
Gradually, we developed feelings for each other.
The first time he held my hand was on the rooftop terrace of our company building.
Under the night sky, his palm felt warm against mine as he whispered:
‘Olivia, I’m falling for you.”
At that moment, my heart was beating so fast it almost jumped out of my chest.
