Chapter 2
When Veloura woke up again, she was in a hospital bed.
She touched her flat stomach, grief flooding her heart in waves. Her baby was really gone.
It seemed she and Nikolai had reached the end.
The hospital room door burst open, and she turned to look.
Nikolai walked in holding Anneliese’s hand, their fingers tightly interlaced like some perfect couple.
Anneliese’s eyes were cold, slightly red–rimmed, glaring at her angrily. “Mrs. Virellic, I already backed off. Why did you still send people to intimidate my parents? You can’t control your own husband, so you just bully innocent people?”
Faced with these false accusations, Veloura instinctively looked toward Nikolai. His gaze was fixed on Anneliese’s face, full of admiration, treasuring her like a precious gem.
Veloura’s heart clenched painfully.
Once upon a time, he’d looked at her the same way–tender and devoted, unable to look away for even a moment.
He used to hold her and say, “You’re perfect, babe. Every other woman is basically invisible next to you.”
But now, from the moment he’d entered the room until this very second, he hadn’t spared her even a glance.
Veloura smiled bitterly.
She ignored Anneliese completely and asked Nikolai, “Nik, why didn’t you save our child?”
“You should be asking yourself why you decided to get pregnant without permission.” Nikolai spoke coldly, his authority unmistakable.
“So I don’t even have the right to want children in this marriage?” Even though she already knew the answer, Veloura still asked desperately.
Nikolai nodded without hesitation, radiating the unyielding authority of someone accustomed to absolute power.
“That’s right.”
Veloura lowered her head, tears welling up in her eyes.
“I didn’t come here to watch you two have a therapy session. Nik, you promised you’d give me an explanation.” Anneliese looked at Nikolai with slight displeasure, maintaining her image of being fearless and intellectually honest in front of him.
Nikolai patted her back soothingly, then looked at Veloura with mild reproach. “Vel, you drove Annie away and intimidated her parents. You owe her an apology.”
Meeting Nikolai’s gaze, Veloura felt a suffocating pain in her chest. She couldn’t help but defend herself, “I didn’t do any of that. I’m not apologizing for something I didn’t do!”
“Still making a scene?”
“I’m telling you the truth.” Veloura shook her head firmly.
Nikolai’s eyes darkened, his expression growing increasingly cold. He gestured toward the door, calling his security detail inside.
“You can apologize on your own, or my guys can help you decide.” Nikolai’s stare was terrifyingly cold.
Veloura’s heart was breaking, but she looked at him stubbornly. She was gambling–betting that he’d keep his promise not to hurt her, that somewhere deep down, he still cared.
“Help Mrs. Virellic remember her manners,” Nikolai ordered casually. Veloura instantly felt like she’d plunged into an ice cave,

She’d lost.
Veloura didn’t struggle, accepting her fate as the bodyguards dragged her from the bed and forced her head down to bow to Anneliese.
“I’m sorry.”
After speaking, she bit her lip hard until she tasted blood.
“Think she means it?” Nikolai’s lips curved slightly as he looked at Anneliese in his arms.
Anneliese nodded, then spoke with determination.
“Thank you, Nik, but we’re done. My parents will never be okay with me being the other woman, and I won’t let my parents get hurt again because of
this.”
“Easy fix—you won’t be the other woman.” Nikolai grabbed Anneliese’s arm, pulling her into his embrace, and took out his phone to call his lawyer.
“Draw up divorce papers. Give Veloura one hundred million.”
Her heart felt like it was being sliced repeatedly.
Veloura stared at him in complete shock–this man who had once risked everything to marry her was now casually ending their marriage for his side piece.
Nikolai dominantly lifted Anneliese’s chin.
“Once the divorce goes through, you’ll be the only woman in my life.”
“Okay, one last chance. But if you screw me over, I’m gone for good.” Anneliese wrapped her arms around Nikolai, and in the corner where he couldn’t see, she shot Veloura the most satisfied smirk imaginable.
Nikolai looked absolutely smitten as he took her hand and left, leaving Veloura sitting alone on the hospital floor.
She watched their retreating figures and started laughing–the kind of broken laughter that turns into sobbing, laughed until her heart hurt, laughed antil tears streamed down her face.
fore long, Nikolai’s lawyer arrived with the divorce papers.
Mrs. Virellic, Mr. Virellic needs your signature, but he wanted me to tell you this is all temporary. Once he gets bored with her, he’ll come back home and you two can remarry and have children.”
“There’s one hundred million on this card. Your anniversary is in two weeks–after you celebrate that, he’s hoping you’ll take a nice long vacation and give him some space to work through… whatever this is. But don’t worry–when you’re ready to come back, he’ll be ready to make things official again.”
Veloura stared at the divorce papers in a daze. Did Nikolai really think she was that pathetic? That she’d just sit around waiting for him to finish playing house?
But he was wrong. Once, she couldn’t leave him because she loved him.
But now, she was done loving someone who treated her like a backup plan.
Without any hesitation, Veloura signed the divorce papers and accepted both the card and the plane ticket.
