Nikolai had never lost his shit like this before. Ever. The rage was consuming him, turning him into something he didn’t recognize.
The crashes and screaming from inside his office had the secretary outside looking like she’d seen a ghost, clutching documents in her trembling hands, too terrified to knock
“Give me those.” Anneliese appeared out of nowhere, snatching the files from the secretary’s hands. “I’ll handle it. Go find something else to do.”
The secretary practically melted with relief, bowing repeatedly. “Thank you so much, Miss Waverly.”
Anneliese smirked. Nikolai had given her special access to the entire building. She could go anywhere, even walk into his office without knocking.
She pushed open the door and froze.
Nikolai looked absolutely fucking terrifying–face gray, eyes completely bloodshot, staring at his phone like it had personally betrayed him. Blood from his split knuckles had soaked through his expensive shirt sleeve.
“Holy shit, what did you do to yourself?” She forced her usual arrogant tone, though her voice cracked slightly.
Nikolai’s head snapped up, and the look he gave her made every survival instinct she had start screaming.
“You told me to skip your little anniversary party, so I did. I was good.” She walked toward his desk, trying to project confidence. “But I need to know why the hell you’re still throwing romantic surprises for your ex–wife.”
Tve been crystal clear from day one–if you’re with me, it’s all or nothing. I won’t share you with some broken, pathetic nobody like Veloura. She’s not worth it.” Anneliese turned away dramatically, waiting for him to panic and grovel like he always did. “If you can’t let her go, then we’re done.”
She waited for the desperate apologies, the promises.
Instead, the office fell dead silent.
She could hear him getting up, but instead of rushing to comfort her, she felt his stare burning into her back like lasers. Every nerve in her body was screaming danger.
She turned around and walked straight into his arms.
“You don’t have to apologize, I just-
His hand closed around her throat.
“You think you’re in the same fucking universe as my baby?” His voice was eerily calm, which made it ten times more terrifying. “I gave you scraps of attention and suddenly everyone’s kissing your ass. Without me, you’re less than dirt.”
For the first time since she’d met him, Anneliese felt genuine, bone–deep terror. But she was in too deep to back down now.
‘If I’m so worthless compared to precious Veloura, why the hell did you chase me in the first place?” The words came out strangled. “Fine, don’t waste your time on me. Let me go.”
Nikolai’s smile was absolutely chilling. His grip tightened until she could barely breathe.
‘See, that’s where you’re confused. You don’t get to quit this game. You’re in it until I say you’re not,
The words hit her like ice water. Jesus Christ, she’d gotten herself tangled up with a complete psychopath. But walking away meant giving up everything–the lifestyle, the status, the money.
“I was just angry. I didn’t mean it.” She softened her voice, eyes filling with calculated tears. “You’re scaring me.”
She could only hold his gaze for three seconds before looking away. Those dead, empty eyes made her look away–he wasn’t even human anymore.
Nikolai released her and she collapsed to the floor. He looked down at her like she was garbage.

“Get the fuck out of my sight.”
“You’re obviously having a bad day. I’ll come back when you’re feeling better.” Anneliese scrambled to her feet, trying to save face.
Before she could escape, someone knocked on the door.
“Mr. Virellic, I have the full report on Mrs. Virellic.”
Anneliese froze.
Something in the assistant’s tone made her stomach drop.
