I can still feel the hell of rage that came over her. I’d never felt anything like it, and now I think I understand why she’s a silverback. Everything done to her was locked away until it exploded and gave way for Midnight’s spirit to find.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Phoebe asks. Her voice blood after taking a nap.

“You have this look on your face,” she shrugs.
I reach for her left hand to see that her knuckles are black and
I take the plastic cup from the nightstand and scoop up some of her ice.
“You laid that man out for a while. He was completely in shock,” I smile.
Phoebe doesn’t find it amusing. Every time she reveals something she’s hidden away from the world, I feel like I begin to understand her a little more. She doesn’t like violence because of the way it was inflicted on her. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone because she knows she never deserved it and that wrath shouldn’t be unleashed on those who didn’t put it there.
This might have been an exception, Angel.
“It’s not the first time I’ve snapped like that,” she says quietly.
“You’re an alpha and a silverback. It’s not going to be the last time you do,” I give her knuckles a break from the cold. “Do you want to talk about what happened?”
“Not really. Are the twins okay?”
“Yeah, after they interrogated the doctor, they went back to Aizen’s room. My mom and Tessa are with them. They’re okay,” I reassure her. “Vy and Vincent are helping Allison and Jason.”
“Can you call Allison in here so she can’t avoid me like she did last night?” she asks.
“Am I allowed to stay?”
“Yes, you are,” she finally smiles. When I hand her the ice, she takes my hand. “Thank you.”
“What for?”
“For stopping me from killing him,”
“Midnight took over,” I remind her. She looks away and drops her hand.
“I don’t know that she did. Every time we feel the same about something, I can never tell where I end or where she begins. I feel bad when it’s over because I know it’s wrong, and I understand a crashout, but she doesn’t, and I think it’s beginning to rub off on me. I hate that I did that, but I don’t regret it this time. I’m just disappointed in us.”
“That’s why you’re the alpha. Your decide,” I gently rub the inside of her hand. “I’ll be right back.”
I find Allison and Vy in Phoebe’s study going over the reports she scanned last night. I take a look at the ones they’ve finished to see that they’re reviewing them for payment.
“That’s a different file. She finished this last night.” I open the folder labeled ‘Battle Budget.’
“Oh,” Allison sighs. “Of course she did.”

“Come on. She sent me to fetch you. This way, you can’t avoid her,” I motion her to the door.
Vy scoffs and sits back. They all made their choices when Ren confirmed how big headed she was being about this union and the changes Phoebe and i had tried to make. I’m not an alpha, but I’ve seen what happens to betas when they contradict their alphas in the way she had at the meeting.
A smite crosses my lips when the scent of fear reaches my nose. It’s faint, with a hint of guilty spice, but it’s there. This woman is dreading talking to Phoebe because she knows she messed up. It’s kind of adorable to me. My sweet angel is coming into her own.
“Alpha Rizen?” she taps lightly on the door. Her tone is gentle.
I push the door open to find my mate at the breakfast table Dr. Holland had brought in so she can move around the room if she didn’t want to be in bed all day. Dr. Holland is here with some tea that smells terrible. Phoebe is drinking it. I kiss her head and sit across from her, where I had been during the ultrasound.
Aside from stripping her vocals, everything else was fine. Melody laughed and said the baby looks like a tiny xenomorph. When Ayrie asked her what that was, she went into heavy detail about Savage’s favorite movie. My mother scolded him for letting her watch that at such a young age. I’m going to let them watch it together later. We can get popcorn and juice boxes in the family room so the other kids can join us.
“What happens if they drink it?” Phoebe asks Dr. Holland.
“It works the same way. They probably wouldn’t feel it as much as you will,” she answers patiently.
“Have a seat,” Phoebe orders Allison. I can hear the way Allison’s heart is just about ready to break out of its cage to escape.
“I should get going,” Dr. Holland tries to excuse herself.
“I think you should also stay,” Phoebe dismisses her idea. She was calm, but I see the moment she realizes she’s been trapped.
“Have my seat,” I say, getting up to sit on the bed.
They both look up at me with absolute terror in their eyes.
I straighten up the sheets and the blanket before taking Phoebe’s place. Phoebe continues to sip her tea casually, making them sweat. I’ve seen this
before.
Every time she goes into business mode. Cevin pointed it out to me when she officially took over Royal Threads. She likes to play with them, wanting their best reaction so that they can commit to what she wants them to do. Then she butters them up.
“If this is about what happened at the meeting,” Allison tries to break the tension.
“It’s not,” she croaks and clears her throat.
“You shouldn’t strain yourself, Alpha,” Dr. Holland tries a different tactic. Attempting to run away.
“I’m feeling a little better,” she says, setting the teacup down and looking up at Allison. “I actually wanted to ask you a favor. I understand if you don’t want to. You can talk it over with your mate if you like.”
“Okay,” Allison answers, confused.
“I have a lot to do here. Catching up and getting Aizen settled. Nathan and I missed a big meeting at court because of the incident yesterday, and I have no one to represent me when I’m unable to attend!” She reaches for the portfolio on the floor beside her and offers it to Allison. Allison reaches for it hesitantly. “When I was waiting for you to come up last night, I saw that I can have someone represent me.
“It’s called the Beta Elder. I was reading the description, and I can’t think of anyone else I’d be able to trust more than you. You’ve done so much for me since I arrived, and this is super important to me. Especially because there will be times when I have to be there as the Rogue Queen.
“You want to make me an Elder?” the confusion on both their faces is laughable.
“I understand if you don’t want to relocate. Nova is pretty far. So, if you decide not to take the job, do you think you could provide me with a list of harne

“Right. Take your time. I’m not in a hurry.”
“Alpha Rizen, about what happened at the meeting.” She sets the portfolio on her lap. “I didn’t mean to blurt out what I did in front of everyone. We were raised a certain way, and letting them take the bodies back is not a custom we practice.”
“I know,” Phoebe nods. “I’d like to explain something to you guys about where I come from.”
