Chapter 174
Chapter 174
Mr. Knightly took over the conversation before any of us could try to explain anything to Knight. Honestly, I liked the way he explained it better. I think it’s cool that he threw in some things that we didn’t know about the Tellers. They’re sneaky and know how to stay out of sight. He said that it wasn’t easy hunting all of them down and while it pisses him off that he missed as many as he did, he isn’t exactly too surprised.
I’m a little in shock about me being related to the man who ruined his entire life, and that he hasn’t decided that I also need to be gone like the rest of
them. What a small werewolf world this is.
“A manhunt is excessive. I want to know what she has to say,” Knight says. “I don’t have to remind you that this is Phoebe’s last living relative.”
I look over at his father with what I am hoping is the same smug look he had on his face earlier. One thing Knight and I share is our curiosity. Especially when it comes to where I come from. We both want to know how it is that I am what I am and how I was able to stay out of everyone’s radar for as long as
I have.
“Mommy, can we get snacks?” Aizen asks.
“I’ll get them,” Jessica stands. He growls lowly and steps closer to me. Hurt instantly crosses her expression.
“It’s okay. I need to step away from you guys to think about this,” I take Aizen’s hand and offer my spare to Ayrie.
She skips over to me to take it. Knight and his father continue to talk about what was said about Sloane Teller.
The kitchen staff all stop what they’re doing when the three of us walk in.
“Is there something you need, Alpha Rizen?” One of the ladies asks.
“Snacks,” Aizen raises his hand.
They all smile and wave us over to the kitchen island. Apples and caramel dips are placed in front of us before I can get Ayrie up on the stool.
“Apples,” she beams. “Yes, please.”
Aizen pinches the edge of the bowl to slide it between the two of them. I take a deep breath to catch the different scents in the room, and they seem safe.. I pick up a slice and dip it into the caramel. As instructed, the twins wait for me to give them the approval, and once I do, they both reach for their snack. It doesn’t go unnoticed by the others.
“Do you mind my asking why you do that?” the lady who gave us the apple asks. “I see you do it every time we hand you anything?”
“Umm,” I hum, looking up at her.
She’s got ocean blue eyes. I’ve never seen eyes sparkle like that. She seems to be about my age. She’s got a full right sleeve–anime characters. Her hair is cut short, long enough at the top to give her bangs, and there are baby blue highlights in her hair. She’s wearing jeans and a t–shirt that says ‘Paw- Trolling‘ and features the pack sigil on the front. Her wrists are covered in bangles, and she’s got a few cute rings on her fingers.
“You don’t have to tell me,” she says apologetically.
“My daughter was poisoned,” I inform her. “My mate was also poisoned. Food is a weakness when it comes to being served by others. She almost die
She straightens up and looks down at Ayrie, who has a whole apple slice in her mouth and one in each hand.
“Oh,” she says and sets them down on the counter before sitting properly to chew her food. “Sowy,” she mumbles. “Yummy.”
“I’m sorry that happened,” she says quietly. “I don’t think I can look at a baby girl this cute and try to hurt her.”
“What’s your name?” I ask.
“Dahlia Renner. Everyone just calls me Ren.”

“Ren,” the three of us repeat. She flushes.
“You don’t look like someone who works in the kitchen.”
“I don’t. I’m a huntress. I was placed here because Beta Allison told us she needed volunteers who had combat skills in the packhouse. For your safety and the pups,” she explains. “We had a meeting while you were away. She adjusted our schedules for this.”
“Is the trail over the bridge here usually left wide open?” I ask her.
“No, it’s an open area. There are usually a couple of guard teams. We run in groups of four. Why do you ask?”
“This morning, there was no one there. Around five–ish.”
“Oh, that’s the time night watch swaps with the morning shift. From five to six,”
“And for a whole hour, the area is unguarded?” I ask. Her pulse races a little, and she turns bright red.
“Every guard swaps at that time,” one of the guys says.
“So, for an entire hour, the entire pack gates are unguarded?”
“That’s what she said, Mommy,” Aizen tsks.
“Dammit,” I growl. “Where can I see surveillance footage from every entryway into the pack?”
“Beta Allison and Roger have full access to that,” she lowers her head.
“Can I get a couple of Ziploc baggies?” I ask.
She nods and immediately moves to get that for me. I split up the apple slices and add the caramel into them. I mix them up and show them how to eat the slices without them having to touch them.
“Alpha Rizen-”
“Thank you, guys,” I say and lead the twins back to the study.
“Dad, we don’t know that they want to.” Knight stops talking when I walk in.
“For an hour every time they rotate patrol shifts, the entire perimeter of the pack is left unguarded. They did something. They snuck in here and distracted us this morning. We need to find out what the fuck they wanted because there is no way in hell that they backed out as easily as they did. She didn’t leave because you threatened her. She left because of what the kid told her. Where is he?”
“He’s in the dungeons on the Eastside,” Allison answers.
“That kid wanted us to catch him,” I say, looking directly at Mr. Knightly.
“How do you figure?” he smirks.
“They’ve been watching us for a while. Long enough for them to know that I run those trails at the time that I do, even after we were gone for a little over a week, I didn’t know that there were guards there because I’ve never seen any. I always run from five to six. Midnight likes to sprint, and she loves that there are hella obstacles for her to jump over.
“The area they stopped us in is where I usually pause to finish drinking my smoothie on my way back to the house. Every day, I like the ro view of the pack from there. You can see the entire layout of the pack from that trunk.

“They knew that they had an hour window, so there was no way in hell the kid could have been caught because they had been studying the land for weeks, maybe. If they’re as trained as they claim to be, there wouldn’t be that kind of mistake. That only leaves the option of it being done on purpose.”
“Stay with her,” Knight instructs him. “I’ll talk to the kid. Allison, you come with me. I’d also like to have a little talk about leaving the pack unguarded for

three hours a day.”
