Ayrle woke up in a terrible mood. She’s sitting at the end of her bed, hair a mess, and a scowl that rivals the one Amy Lynn gave me when Knight offers fired her. He really tried to have his father speak to me about changing my mind, but there is no changing it. She was pissed about being here. I can t have someone that hostile around people I’m trying to break bread with. Especially because it involves my son.
“You okay?” I ask, crouching down in front of her with the outfit I picked out today.
“I got ouchie,” she rubs her eyes. I touch her forehead, but if anything, she’s cold.
“If you want, you can go back to bed,” I suggest. “We can skip training with D.A.D.”
“Is okay,” she waves me off. “Ima shower.”
“Do you need my help?” I ask. She stops halfway to her bathroom to give me the dirtiest look she’s ever given me. She doesn’t say a word and even slams the door shut. “Teenage Ayrie is going to eat me up.”
“We talked about the door slamming,” Knight calls out from somewhere. She responds with a growl.
“Is that normal?” I ask him when he comes into the room.
“Yeah, and it’s actually very tame. Has Aizen been giving you any trouble?”
“None. He looks like he’s having a great time. Maybe you can talk to him? He might be more open with you if there’s a problem.”
“There’s no problem. Ayrie’s wolf is just grumpy in the mornings. What happened with Amy? I don’t like her is not a valid reason.”
“She isn’t going to want to be around the pack wolves. If you want me to have a shadow here, it’s either going to have to be one of the pack wolves or someone who doesn’t mind being around them. She was rude to the ladies in the kitchen, and when I tried to ask her about herself, she got defensive. I don’t need the extra stress from one of your fan girls.”
“You don’t know that’s what it was,” he scoffs.
“It’s always going to be that, Hon. Who the fuck comes to their first day of work acting like-” the bathroom door swings open and Ayrie storms out to get the clothes I set out for her a long with some other stuff before she turns back to the bathroom. “Like that.”
“Okay, I’ll start over,” he says and sounds genuinely upset.
“Why did you pick her?” I ask.
“I’ve worked with her before, and she used to babysit Ramona when she was little. There were a couple of incidents, and she handled them perfectly. That and you guys are around the same age. I thought you’d get along.”
“This is the last week Aizen is out of school. So, I was thinking maybe we can all do some stuff together before you split them up.”
“Angel, I’m splitting them up. We’re training them.”
“Okay,” I clean up the toys and some of the dresses Aýrie left out when Melody was here.
“Are you upset with me? I don’t understand what’s happening.”
I duck out of the room, not wanting to continue the conversation with him. Aizen is already showered and looking for something to wear when I his room. He doesn’t follow, and I’m glad for that.
“Good morning, Mommy,” Aizen greets me. “Blue, please.”
“Good morning, my love. How are you feeling?” I ask, getting his clothes.

Good. I took a shower,” he beams.
I see that. Did you use the loofa this time?”
Yes, and got my ears,” he rolls his eyes.
“Did you brush your teeth?”
“Not in the shower,” he giggles and reaches for the clothes when I hand them over.
“Well, get to it. Remember to set the timer.”
“Yes, Mom,” he calls back.
Knight is standing in the doorway when I try to leave. Aizen isn’t one to be leaving things lying around. Even the bed is done. Hot well, but he tries his best. I love how he likes to do things for himself when I’m not around.
“Are we having our first fight?” Knight asks.
“Are you going to keep hyping up Amy to get me to accept her being my shadow?”
He stares at me for a moment and then shakes his head. I move past him and head back into Ayrie’s room to find her sitting on the bed with the clothes! set out for her beside her.
“I changed my mind. I got sleepy again,” she crawls under the blanket. “I don’t want to wear pink. It’s not a pink day, Mom,” she pulls the blanket over her head.
“Blue?” I offer.
“Okay,” she mumbles and then yawns. I swap out her clothes and set them on the bathroom counter. I turn the lights off and close the door. When I turn around, Knight is standing there again.
“Will you feel better if I change out of this and we go for your morning walk together? I know you like starting off your day with that.”
“Is going alone an option?”
“No,”
“Fine. I’ll be downstairs.” I agree. I take my cup from where I left it and head down to wait for him. His father is waiting for me. “Good morning, Mr. Knightly.”
“Don’t good morning me, Alpha Rizen: What the fuck?”
“Are you going to give me shit about Amy as well?”
“No, fuck her. I told Nathan from the beginning that she wouldn’t be a good fit. She’s not a team player. Generational Rogues rarely are. They’re as bad as traditionalists. I mean, what the fuck? I brought you the best doctors,” he growls.
“You also brought me the best contraceptives your money can buy. There are doctors here, Mr. Knightly. You were the one who told me that I would need to connect with these people, Thank you for bringing them, but I would like to do this here. I read they have a good medical team.”
“I want you to have the best medical team,” he places his hands on his hips. “These are my grandchildren.”
“And they’re my children. Knight told me he got me the best guard he could find, and I didn’t like her. Can you guys trust that I can take care some of my personal things on my own?”
“I would like to be present-”
“No,” I stop him.

“Nope. We’re not doing that. You will be informed of everything regarding the baby, along with everyone else. You’re being a helicopter father–in–law again. Don’t you have other people to boss around? The construction guys building the villas, for example?”
“You know I love kids, particularly when they’re small.”
“Well, she’s not even a bean yet, so you have time to get hyped up about other stuff before this. Let me process and be mad at your son for not dropping the Amy shit.”
“I do prefer for you to be upset with him. All right. I will go do the other thing. Would you like me to help you find a guard?”
“Is that girl, Helena, who watched us at the airport, available?”
“She is. In fact, she’s been looking to be relocated. That’s a great idea. I’ll run it by her and Nathan. Do not go anywhere unaccompanied, Phoebe. The traditionalist’s threat should never be taken lightly.”
