Chapter 156
“Do you see the smile on this man’s face?” one of the talk show hosts asks as the footage of us at the rebranding gala plays on my table’s screen. “I don’t remember ever seeing The Rogue King smile before. Not like this.”
“I agree. He’s always been very serious and reckless. This rebranding is not just for what had once been the great company Royal Threads, but also for his image. The Rogue Queen has an unmistakable charm. I expect nothing less from a Rizen Alpha.
“Her grandfather must have been profoundly proud of her. May he rest in peace. I have also been loving the Knight Daddy posts. This pup has her daddy wound tightly around her little finger.”
“Computer mute audio,” Knight calls out from behind me. The audio is muted. I glance back at him, unable to fully turn, so I don’t accidentally cut the fabric wrong. “We have the entire weekend to ourselves, and you’re working?”
“What were you doing?” I roll my eyes and pin the fabric down in case he gets any stupid ideas.
“Making sure we have your nesting supplies,” he says, coming over to see what I’m working on.
“What are nesting supplies?” I laugh.
“Umm, extra bed sheets, pillows, and things with my scent on them. Why did you laugh?” he smirks.
“Because I imagined you out in the woods collecting sticks and moss,” I grin. He rolls his eyes and bumps me with his shoulder.
“I also made dinner. So, go ahead and clean up.” he kisses my temple and walks away.
At the mention of food, Midnight perks up excitedly. So, now I definitely have to put everything in a place so I can come back to it later. I shut my study and head upstairs. I’ve missed being home. The scents are so familiar, and for once, I feel safe. I clean up and slip into something more comfortable before going back down.
“You’re happy here,” Knight says when I get to the dining room.
“Of course, this is our home,” I say, helping him set up the table. He goes into the kitchen and returns with our dinner. “Drinks?”
“Sure, whatever you want,” he agrees.
His tone is pensive, and I know something is weighing on his mind. take a bottle of wine and two glasses. I also place his whiskey on the warmer for him. I know that if our conversation is heavy, he’ll want something more substantial than wine after dinner.
“Is everything okay?” I ask him as I serve the glasses. He smiles and nods.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t it?”
“You have this vibe,” I say, sitting down.
He made me steak with buttery veggies and a garden salad. There is more steak than anything else because he knows exactly how much both Midnight and I like it. I love that he pays attention to things. How attentive he is when he’s with me. My second favorite part about our partnership so far is that we both have our own thing and can meet in the middle. The first is the way he is with the twins. They both love him and have full has to offer them.
ted to everything he
I wonder what’s bugging him. I can’t think of a single thing that could be outside of his business with my sister and the rest of very small pack of crazies Could they have found something more than the alphas who were being targeted? Did any of them die? Okay, now I’m freaking out because what if those deaths are pinned on the vampires? Or worse. Rogues like us.
“Hey, what’s happening?” he asks, reaching out to me.
“Are we in trouble? Is that why you’re being so-” what’s the right word?
Chapter 156
“So?” he presses his lips together, trying not to make fun of me, but let’s be honest. We have a track record of shit happens.
“Aloof?” I offer.
“Aloof?” he laughs. “No one has ever accused me of being aloof.”
“Honey, that’s a lie. You are like the most aloof guy I know, and I know Violetta Wilde. Alpha of the Aloofs.” I snort. “You have your thinking face on. Like you want to tell me something, or maybe ask. I can tell. I can read the room very well, and the room says, pensive. Quietly, being a good boy for no
reason.”
“A good boy?” he laughs.
“Please, just tell me or ask,” I sigh and stuff a piece of steak in my mouth. “This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever had in my mouth.”
“I’m sorry I’m scaring you,” he laughs. “No, we’re not in trouble. Not more than what you already know. We’ve successfully removed the sector threat, and your mother has retreated since.”
“Good. We need to establish the protocol for moving around when we leave the sector locations. I would not be cool with one of us getting hurt for trespassing. I know that’s a big thing for you guys.”
“No, that’s not what the sectors are. From what little Crazy has learned, the entire planet is one massive experiment. Everything is divided into sectors, and those of us in charge, like Perry and Jonas, have a say in how our region prospers. They decide who they think would further the experiment and help them gain power.
“Just like we were favored. There are others, and there are ranks. The Wraith was the second in command. That’s my rank now. Roman and Violetta follow. We’re going to try to put together as much as we can with what we’re working with. The only other person we’ve told about this is the Vampire
Queen.
“We’ve allowed her to take over the science division. She gets around with the nerds, and she’s been the only one who can decipher what we already. have. We’ve made a lot of progresses regarding these kids we found and a whole bunch of other crazy shit.”
“Are you talking about the little girl staying with Perry?” I ask.
“Yes, and there’s a little boy as well. They were able to identify the chemical that binds us as mates. They created two kids who share a chemical bond.”
“They identified two little kids who are fated to be mates? That little girl and a boy?”
“It’s a little more complicated than that. It’s more like they created a little girl and boy to be mates. From what I understand, it’s encoded in our bloodlines. So, what they did was pick people who have similar genetic anomalies.
“One of them was Mackenzie Phurry. Perry’s sister–in–law from her first mating. He’s the little boy’s mother. The crazy shit about Mack is that she was mated to Jonas’s cousin. He could have saved her. Turned her into what your sister is now, but she refused. She went feral.”
“Like Perry?”
“No, Jonas was able to kill her before the wolf took over. It’s a little like how, when we relinquish our body over to our wolves. Except that when a wolf goes feral, the part of them that is us, skin, dies, and they can never turn back.”
“How did Perry come back? I don’t like asking her about that. I don’t like making her suffer.”
“He punched a hole through her chest, barely missing her heart. Then they put her in an ice box where the bond between her and Jonas, after they marked one another, kept her alive and helped her heal. Slowly, but what was replaced was Lycan, so she had to say goodbye to her wolf. There wasn’t enough of her werewolf genetics left to save the spirit.”
“I can listen to you talk all day. But you’re just buying time.” I smile at him. “I have a ton of questions, but I want to know what’s bothering you first.”
