The day of Chase’s graduation party arrived.
The scores for the college entrance exams
were released yesterday. Chase’s score was
so high it was hidden, and he’d already
gotten calls from admissions officers at
Harvard and Yale.
So the Sterling family invited a ton of media
and live–streamers to brag about it.
By then, I was already at the airport, getting
all the juicy details from the comments.
Mr. Sterling had invited everyone.
All the teachers and students from our grade
were there, along with executives from most
of the companies Sterling Corp did business
with.
Chase noticed I hadn’t arrived and started
calling me nonstop, but I didn’t pick up.
After his dad’s speech, it was Chase’s turn.
He steeled himself and pulled Bailey onto the
stage with him.
He announced to everyone that Bailey was his
girlfriend.
く
The students who didn’t know the whole story
gasped. After all, his big confession to me
had been the talk of the school.
How was his girlfriend suddenly Bailey?
At that moment, Bailey covered her face and
started to cry.
“Summer forced him to do this! She
threatened Chase that if he didn’t confess to
her, she’d have people bully me!”
“And she said she’d use all her family’s power
to make sure I couldn’t get into college!”
“I know I’m just a normal person, not a rich
heiress like her. But even normal people have
the right to get an education and find
happiness!”
Г
“If I don’t stand up now, who knows how
many other people Summer will hurt? So I
decided to stop being afraid. I hope you’ll all
support me.”
Her speech perfectly targeted the internet’s
obsession with class warfare and rich–kid
privilege.
That’s when I understood. They didn’t just
want to see me break down; they wanted to
ruin me.
If these accusations stuck, forget about
studying abroad–our company’s stock and
products would take a massive hit.
Reporters were already rushing forward,
cameras flashing, eager to get more details.
Bailey was beaming, completely lost in the joy
of finally destroying me.
Suddenly, the giant screen on the stage
behind them lit up.
Every eye in the room was drawn to it.
The screen was playing audio and video
recordings of Chase and Bailey plotting
against me.
Including the conversation Chase had with his
friend at the restaurant.
And the video of Bailey in the party room,
smugly telling her friends about her plan.
And all of their text messages.

Calling me vicious is fine.
In my opinion, only the ruthless and decisive
get what they want in life.
So I’ll keep on living my life, viciously and
joyfully.
But I’m not a side character. I am, and always
will be, the main character of my own story.
