“Wesley, did you hear that shot?” Landon froze, getting on high alert as if an enemy was coming.
Wesley, hearing it too, immediately called to get more information. “What? Zachary’s room?”
Without a second thought, Landon pushed his wheelchair forward. Aaron, who had been waiting outside the office, rushed to stop him. “Mr. Kingsley, you can’t go there.”
“Move,” Landon snapped, his voice filled with urgency. Amelia was in Zachary’s room, and Landon’s mind was filled with all sorts of thoughts now. ‘Is she okay? Was she the one who’d been shot? Who dared to harm my woman?‘
“Calm down, Landon. It’s Zachary who’s been shot. Your wife is fine.” Wesley hurried over, pushing Landon back and closing the office door behind them.
Hearing that Amelia was unharmed, Landon’s heart finally slowed, but his chest still ached with tension. “What’s going on?”
“It’s still under investigation,” Wesley replied.
Landon’s anger flared once again, his expression darkening with fury. “Aaron, go check on her. Make sure she’s safe and bring her back here now.”
“Got it,” Aaron replied.
“Wesley, tell the hospital director that whatever happens, no one can hurt Amelia,” Landon added.
“Okay.” Aaron and Wesley rushed off without hesitation. At that moment, Landon was like a lion–no one dared cross him.
By the time Aaron arrived, the room was already crowded.
Zachary lay motionless on the bed, his blood dripping from his forehead, soaking his shirt. The shot had been fatal–there was no saving him.
Amelia was shaking so badly she could barely stand, relying on Brooke for support.
Her face was ghostly pale, and she was clearly in shock. The window was shattered, and fragments of glass littered Zachary’s bed, evidence of the
bullet’s force.
“Mrs. Kingsley, you say you were negotiating with him at the time?” the officer asked.
Amelia nodded slowly in her paleness. “We were just talking. That’s it.”
“Do you know who fired the shot?” the officer pressed further.
“How would I know? The bullet came from outside, and if it had been even a fraction off, I would be the one lying there.” Amelia’s voice quivered, still feeling the aftershock of the event.
No one would have imagined that Zachary would be assassinated. Amelia had been standing with her back to the window, and the bullet had nearly grazed her face. The terror of it still hasn’t left her–she’s still struggling to recover from the shock.
“Mrs. Kingsley, if you were just visiting a patient, why did you smash Mr. Foster’s phone and break the emergency call button?” the officer asked again.
Amelia hesitated about whether she should expose the entire story. This was the first time she had ever been in a situation like this in both her lives, and she didn’t know what the right thing to do was
Zachary’s death had nothing to do with her, but she still needed the police to believe that.
“Mrs. Kingsley.” Aaron squeezed through the crowd and stood next to Amelia. While managing the police officers, he quietly reassured her, “Don’t worry, Mr. Kingsley sent me to take you away.”

A wave of warmth washed over Amelia.
She had never truly realized until now that Landon was her safe harbor. And now, more than ever, he indeed was her safe place. After witnessing Zachary’s death, her frozen, stiff limbs slowly began to regain strength.
But once Landon found out what she had done, he would probably keep his distance from her.
Damaging property and preventing a patient from seeing a doctor were illegal acts that could damage the Kingsley family’s reputation.
“I broke his phone. Zachary was going to harm Mrs. Kingsley,” Brooke said. “I also broke the call button. You can find my fingerprint on it.”
A quick check confirmed that Brooke was stating the truth.
Amelia’s heart raced as she nervously looked at Brooke. Brooke shook her head slightly, signaling Amelia not to interfere–one wrong word now, and they’d have a confession on record.
Amelia had no choice but to remain silent, forcing herself to stay calm. It was just too coincidental that the shot came right when Zachary was about to reveal William’s whereabouts.
She wondered if she was being watched. ‘It seems the killer was trying to stop her from finding William, but why?‘
A whirlwind of thoughts swirled in her mind, tangled up like a knot of yarn she couldn’t untangle. She needed someone to share her thoughts with, someone to help her find a way out.
She wasn’t sure what Aaron and the police had discussed, but they began to examine the scene. Amelia was led into a separate room to wait, and it was just the three of them in the room now. Aaron looked at her with concern. “Mrs. Kingsley, are you alright?”
“Aaron, someone is trying to stop me from seeing William.” Amelia’s voice trembled as she spoke.
“Who?” Aaron asked in shock.
Amelia just wanted to retrieve Debra’s belongings from William, so how could anyone have an issue with that? Amelia shook her head. “I don’t know. But I’m sure it’s not anyone from the Edwards family.”
In her previous life, the Edwards family only knew that the tiara was worth a fortune. The day after her marriage to Zachary, they pushed her to retrieve the tiara and not long after, Zachary convinced her to sell it, claiming they didn’t have enough funds.
Everything went smoothly. So why, in this life, was it so difficult?
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Kingsley. Mr. Kingsley said he’s got everything/covered,” Aaron reassured her.
Amelia’s eyes welled up with tears as she choked, “What if I’ve committed a crime?”
“You didn’t kill anyone. What crime could you have committed?” Aaron chuckled.
Amelia hesitated for a moment, then decided to lay everything out. After hearing her story, Aaron handed her his phone.
Amelia finally realized that Aaron had been on a call with Landon the whole time. ‘Had he heard everything?‘ she wondered.
“Amelia, you can tell the police everything.” Landon’s calm, reassuring voice came through.
Her frantic thoughts began to settle at his words. But this might affect the Kingsley family’s reputation, right? Maybe it would be better if=”
“What’s the reputation worth?” Before Amelia could even bring up the divorce, Landon snorted dismissively.
“Amelia, you did well.” Landon’s voice softened. “It’s a pity I wasn’t there to see Zachary’s pathetic reaction.”
Amelia blinked in disbelief. ‘Does he actually support me? Doesn’t he think I was being too harsh?‘

“I can’t be next to you right now, but I’ll be at home waiting for you. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of everything,” Landon reassured her again.
“Okay.” After hanging up, Amelia still couldn’t shake the feeling that she was dreaming. She had committed the crime of obstructing a patient’s treatment, yet Landon wasn’t angry with her.
“Mrs. Kingsley, Mr. Kingsley is really concerned about you. If it weren’t for Dr. Harrington and me stopping him, Mr. Kingsley would have rushed to find you. I’ve never seen him so anxious about anyone,” Aaron said.
He put his phone away, intentionally giving his boss some credit.
Amelia was touched once again. She made up her mind that when she saw Landon next, she would thank him in person–and give him a full–body spa a a token of her appreciation.
Shortly after, the police arrived to take their statements.
Following Landon’s advice, Amelia told them everything. The male officers were left stunned, thinking, ‘Women these days sure are ruthless. They can even deliberately ruin a man’s sex life and snatch his happiness away for the rest of his life.‘
“Well, I just threatened him. I didn’t actually hurt him,” Amelia said, feeling embarrassed as her ears turned red.
“Okay, we got it,” the officer responded, albeit reluctantly, before asking a few more questions.
Amelia answered truthfully, though the weight of the situation still hung over her.
“Her statement has been taken, so can we leave now?” Aaron asked.
“Sorry, you can’t go yet,” the officer said.
