Amy, I’ll buy you a bag,” she said.
She really thinks a bag can fix everything? Not a chance, Amelia thought
“No,” she said.
“How about a necklace?” Kayla asked.
“No,” she said.
They both looked helpless.
Whatever Kayla tried to offer as an apology, Amelia refused.
Kayla was stumped.
Amelia was really hard to please when she was mad.
“I just want you all to come back safe,” Amelia said, her lips curling up despite herself.
Kayla was taken aback, then laughed. “You little brat, you’re messing with me, aren’t you?”
“You taught me well. A good wife knows how to get jealous, and a good sister–in–law knows how to throw a fit,” Amelia said, finally bursting
into laughter.
Kayla shook her head helplessly.
Serves me right for trying to set someone up–turns out I just dug a hole for myself,‘ she thought.
The nanny came over with a crying Kimsey, looking for his mother. Amelia scooped her son up and gently tried to calm him down,
Kayla watched with envy, quietly snapping a few screenshots on her phone, planning to show them to Landon once he finished work.
“Kimsey, look, Auntie Kayla is here too!” Amelia said, turning her son toward the camera.
Little Kimsey, clever as ever, gave the camera a sweet smile. His innocent face was still streaked with tears, making him look even more
adorable.
Kayla couldn’t help but think of her own’son-
Landen.
She hadn’t been home to spend time with him in days. ‘Has Landen been sulking without me?‘ she wondered.

“Kayla, Landen’s still at school. If you want to talk to him, you’ll have to call back fater. But don’t worry, we’re all doing fine at home,” Amelia said.
“I don’t miss him. Anyway, I’ll be back in a few days,” Kayla insisted, trying to sound tough.
Amelia shook her head with a laugh. “Kayla, I’m taking Landen and Kimsey out for burgers. I’ll catch up with you later?
“Alright! Let them go wild–eat as much as they want, buy whatever they want, and spend all your money!” Kayla said.
“So childish!” Amelia replied.
Amelia waved, and Kayla reluctantly hung up, not wanting to say goodbye.
Kayla didn’t mention seeing her son, and neither did Amelia.
They both knew that if they started video chatting, they’d end up crying.
She just needed to wait a little longer. Maybe Night Owl would wrap up Monroe’s case today, and then they could finally go back to Norava.
Kayla lit another cigarette and smoked it slowly. Figuring Landon and the others would be back soon, she started grinding coffee beans, planning to make them some Orange C Iced Americanos to help her cool off and perk up.
That Orange C Iced Americano–with fresh orange slices–was Jonny’s absolute favorite. After trying it a few times herself and liking it, she made a point to learn how to make it.
Honestly, Jonny got such refined taste and paid attention to all the little details–too bad he was a lunatic.
Lost in her thoughts, Kayla was startled when Landon rushed in. “Kayla, we’re heading back to Norava right now.”
“Huh?”
“The person who came to pick up Monica today wasn’t Monroe!”
Amelia never expected that a simple outing with the kids would end in them getting kidnapped.
And it happened even with four tough bodyguards by her side.
She didn’t even know what had happened–just felt a moment of mental haze, and the next thing she knew, she was tied up and in a car.
Then someone jabbed her with a needle, and her whole body went limp. She could barely keep hold of her son.
The middle–aged man in a sharp suit radiated both a menacing aura and an air of nobility. It was none other Monroe, the man who should have been at the police station being questioned.
With practiced ease, he took Kimsey from Amelia’s arms and said, “Mrs. Kingsley, I don’t like hitting women, so don’t panic.”
“Don’t you dare touch my son!” Amelia screamed weakly, her voice barely more than a whisper.
“What a cute little boy,” Monroe remarked.
Monroe looked at Kimsey, a faint smile appearing on his face.
Amelia’s heart was in her throat as she asked, her voice trembling, “Who are you?”

“I have a daughter the most beautiful princess in the world. Her name is Monica, Monroe said, his face beaming with pride.
Amelia felt like she was about to faint.
She had actually fallen into the hands of the Montgomery family.
“I heard you’re pretty gutsy. You escaped from the operating table and ended up in Landon’s bed, and even managed his company white he was in a coma?” Monroe said.
He spoke while teasing kimsey.
To Amelia’s surprise, Kimsey wasn’t the least bit afraid of him, and burst out giggling at Monroe’s antics.
Amelia was so tense, her nerves were stretched to the limit.
“I’ve looked into you. You’re not supposed to be that capable,” Monroe said, giving Amelia a once–over.
He didn’t believe that a girl who had only just gotten over a lovesick phase, with no management experience at all, could possibly handle Kingsley Group.
But she really did manage to keep Kingsley Group afloat when the Kingsley family was at its weakest–so much so that Marvin never even got a chance to interfere.
“My abilities speak for themselves,” Amelia said, her voice barely more than a whisper, seething with both anger and frustration.
She’d been kidnapped more than once, but this was by far the worst situation yet.
If he could raise a daughter like Monica, the father wouldn’t be any better.
And besides, the Montgomery family was a Mystic Sect known for crafting charm poison.
They were even scarier than the so–called crazy Kyle family–the Kington Gang.
“Amelia, why did you suddenly realize you were being tricked right there on the operating table?” Monroe asked.
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat as she remembered Landon’s warning before he left for Dreicean: ‘Don’t let anyone find out you can hear my
thoughts..
‘Is Monroe starting to suspect me?‘ she wondered.
‘But why?‘
Amelia steadied herself and asked, a bit puzzled, “Mr. Montgomery, is there really any point in asking me this? Does the Edwards family’s business have anything to do with you?”
“Just curious,” Monroe said casually.
“Seriously?” Amelia gave him a look of utter disbelief. “You kidnapped me and my kid just because you were curious?”
She thought to herself, ‘If that’s all this is about, maybe I’m not in as much trouble as I thought!‘
“Mrs. Kingsley, you still haven’t answered me. Why did you suddenly become aware of what was going on?” Monroe pressed.
“I saw Sandra in the operating room, dressed in a white coat pretending to be an assistant, urging the doctor to operate on me. I was so
scared that I nearly peed myself. When I came out, I noticed Zachary acting weird, and I started to suspect the two of them were having an
affair. The moment I ran, it confirmed everything I was afraid of,” Amelia said.

Her story sounded airtight, and Monroe looked visibly disappointed. “So that’s alfit was…”
“Mr. Montgomery, a woman’s intuition about relationships is usually dead on. Luckily, I managed to hide in Landon’s hospital room. If ! hadn’t, I would’ve been done for,” Amelia said.
As she recalled the past, she carefully controlled her expression, making herself look panicked, shaken, and relieved all at once.
Monroe seemed to buy it and didn’t press any further.
Amelia stammered, her voice pleading, “Mr. Montgomery, you can look into everything I said–it’s all true. Please, just let me go home!”
“No.”
Monroe couldn’t resist pinching Kimsey’s chubby cheeks, clearly unable to get enough of the little guy.
“Mr. Montgomery?” Amelia called out, her voice shaky.
“My daughter has been wronged so badly–someone has to pay for that!”
Monroe glanced at her, giving her a chilling, sinister grin.
Amelia’s heart sank.
Kayla had said Night Owl was helping Landon deal with Monroe, so by all rights, he should’ve been at the police station right now.
‘Why is he suddenly here in Norava?‘ she wondered.
‘Could it be Monroe had supernatural powers that Landon is so wary of?‘
Her pupils shrank sharply, her heart leaping in terror.
‘Mystic arts, talismanic poisons… that’s it!‘ she realized. ‘The way Marvin detoxified Gloria was just bizarre.‘
Nobody even laid a finger on him, but right after he finished the antidote, Marvin just dropped dead.
It had to be because of some supernatural ability.
