Though he was furious when he found out Jennifer had abused her power as a doctor to fake the report, deep down, he thought that an apology would fix everything. It never crossed his mind that Jennifer might end up behind bars.
If something really happened to her and she got a criminal record, it would be so hard for her to find a job, and people would see her in a negative light. The world was just that cruel.
“So, we’re supposed to stand by and watch Jennifer go to jail?” Donald asked.

“It’s out of our hands. If Jonathan signs the letter of forgiveness, Jennifer might get a lighter sentence. That’s already the best we can hope for,” Gary replied.
Donald said nothing and clenched his fists tightly.
Jonathan finished his call and walked back over. He said he could sign the letter of forgiveness and request a lighter sentence, but beyond that, there was nothing more he could do.
Honestly, Jonathan didn’t want things to end up like this either. For Teresa’s sake, he had decided to let the whole forgery thing go. He didn’t want to bring it up ever again.
However, Irene sued Jennifer. That was something completely out of Jonathan’s hands.
Donald let out a heavy sigh and said, “Jennifer has been punished enough. She lost her job and her mother’s love, and she even tried to take her own life. She almost didn’t make it. She has suffered so much already. Isn’t that enough?”
Jonathan narrowed his eyes a bit. He said, “I know all that. Like I said, whether she gets out or not isn’t up to me. I’ve already checked.
“Tomorrow at eight, I’ll sign the letter of forgiveness, and after that, it’s in the lawyers‘ hands. I’ve got things to do. I have to go now.”
Jonathan still had a ton on his plate, so he decided to leave. Staying any longer would be a waste of time, because Jonathan had already finished giving his statement.
But Donald still couldn’t let it go. He wanted to ask Jonathan if there was any other way to get Jennifer out of this. He couldn’t stand the idea of Jennifer being stuck there. Every single second that passed was torture for him.
Gary blocked his way. “Didn’t you hear what Jonathan said? He can’t just snap his fingers and get her out right away. He’s not some all–powerful mob boss. Let’s give him a break. He needs rest.”
Donald asked, “Isn’t there any other way? Can’t I serve her sentence for her? Jennifer is a woman. She couldn’t stand it.”
Gary got a bit annoyed. “Are you a kid or something? Do you know where you are? Everything you say here is being recorded. If anyone could take the blame for someone else, what’s the use of laws?
“Besides, Jennifer won’t be locked up for long. I checked with Jonathan’s lawyer friend. If Jennifer gets Jonathan’s forgiveness, the most she’ll get is six months of detention.”
Donald couldn’t accept Jennifer being in jail for half a year, either. He thought, Jennifer is miserable enough. She lost so much. And now she should be thrown in jail?
Gary sighed and said, “Honestly, I used to think just like you. I also thought about taking the fall for Jennifer, but she is stubborn and wouldn’t see reason. Now, she has no one to blame but herself and Irene.”
Donald slumped in defeat. He said bitterly, “You’re right. Aunt Irene has been deliberately looking for trouble, or none of this would have happened in the first place.”
If nobody had reported it, the police wouldn’t have put it on record.

Now, Donald was pinning all the blame on Irene. He slammed his fist onto the wall beside him and said, “I’ve never disliked anyone this much before.” He actually hated Irene right now.
Gary clasped his hands in front of his mouth and said, “This is already the best outcome we could hope for. Let’s just wait until tomorrow and see how long Jennifer will get sentenced for.”
