“Dad, where are you going? Michael asked. He gripped Jonathan’s hand tightly, afraid he would leave again and never come
back.
Jonathan picked up Michael and carried him to the backyard to comfort him. “Be good. I need to take care of something. I
will be back soon.”
Once Michael was comforted, Jonathan told Teresa he would be back soon. He also said, “I had no idea my mom was stirring up trouble again.”
“I know, Teresa replied. She trusted him this time.
Jonathan thought for a moment and added. “I promise I’ll do everything I can to make sure both families keep their dignity.”
After all, Evelyn liked Jennifer very much.

Teresa thought for a while and said. “Benny told me about some similar cases. That’s the best Jennifer could get a lighter sentence. Even if the families end up at odds, it’s fine. We’ll just come clean about the fake remarriage.”
Jonathan suddenly frowned. “If this needs to be exposed. I’ll be the one to say it. You just leave it with me, stay home, and get
some rest.”
Teresa nodded.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Irene had left, leaving only Gary and Donald still there.
Donald stared out the window, lost in thought. A shadow of stubble darkened his chin. He had no idea how Jennifer was these days. He wondered if she was stuck in a tiny, stuffy cell, and if she felt scared.
They were still in the cooling–off period, so they hadn’t gotten the divorce certificate and weren’t really divorced yet. That meant, at least on paper, he was still Jennifer’s husband.
Gary bought a cup of coffee to keep himself awake. When he was scrolling through his phone, he suddenly heard a familiar voice. “What are you two doing here?”
Gary put down his cup and looked up happily. He called. “Jonathan.”
When he was about to walk over to Jonathan, Donald rushed past him and asked. “Jonathan, you’re out of the Department of Justice’s office. Is everything okay?”
“Yes. I heard my mom sued Jennifer,” Jonathan said.
“Yeah. It’s all because of that DNA test Jennifer did before. Aunt Irene brought up the old stuff,” Donald replied.
Donald didn’t hesitate. He said, “Jonathan, you need to sign a letter of forgiveness and claim you won’t hold Jennifer responsible. This way she can get out of there.”
Jonathan thought for a moment and said, “I can forgive her, but it isn’t up to me whether she can get released or not.”
“What do you mean? Why is that?” Donald blurted out.
Just then, Jonathan’s phone rang. He stepped aside to take the call, leaving the questions hanging in the air.
Donald was getting anxious. He wondered, ‘How can Jonathan so calmly take a call right now? I’m seriously worried about Jennifer. If she ends up in jail, what will happen to her for the rest of her life?”
Gary grabbed Donald’s arm and said, “Jonathan is right. His forgiveness doesn’t mean Jennifer will be released.”

“Why not? Jennifer admitted her fault and even quit her job. Jonathan said he wouldn’t go after her as long as she stopped being a doctor. How could she still end up in jail?” Donald protested.
“Don’t you get it? It’s not Jonathan who made her go to jail,” Gary replied.

When Gary had been scrolling through his phone, he hadn’t been playing games or watching videos. He had been searching for cases similar to Jennifer’s instead.
“Jennifer is facing criminal charges. That’s not what Jonathan’s forgiveness could change. This isn’t like running a red light or getting into a fender bender, where you just pay a fine and move on. Law–breaking and crime commitment aren’t the same thing,” Gary explained.
Donald’s eyes flashed, and his lips were pressed into a hard line. He really hadn’t thought it through.
