Chapter 848
Irene could only keep praying to her late husband, begging that Teresa wouldn’t die.
She had only messed with Teresa’s company a little, and Jonathan already wanted to skin her alive. If Teresa died because of her, Irene couldn’t even imagine what Jonathan would do to her.

She was getting old now, and she was terrified Jonathan would abandon her, and afraid he’d end up hating her.
Finally, the red light outside the emergency room went out.
Irene hurried over, flustered. “Doctor, how is she? She didn’t die, did she?” she pressed.
The doctor took off his mask and said, “Fortunately, she was brought in just in time. The pregnant woman’s life was saved.”
“Really?” Irene let out a sigh of relief, murmuring to herself, “Thank goodness, the pregnant woman’s safe.” But then she froze, her eyes widening in shock. Then she added, “Wait. What did you say? Pregnant woman?”
Irene thought, ‘Teresa already had Michael. How could she possibly be pregnant again?‘
Irene stared at the doctor in utter disbelief and asked, “Doctor, what are you saying? Are you telling me she’s pregnant?”
The doctor glanced at Irene, looking puzzled. “You didn’t know? What’s your relationship to the patient?” the doctor asked.
“I’m her mother–in–law.”
“Seriously? You’re her mother–in–law, and you had no idea your daughter–in–law is almost seven months pregnant?”
Another blow hit Irene hard. She thought, ‘Seven months pregnant? How could that be? No wonder she seemed so off today. Her face was so pale, sweat beading on her forehead like she might faint. But…‘
She hadn’t even noticed Teresa’s belly. She still looked slim, let alone someone seven months pregnant.
The doctor explained, “She’s not in any immediate danger right now. We’ll do a thorough check–up on her.”
Irene snapped out of it and said, “So when can I see her? I need to talk to her.”
“Once the check–up is done, you can see her,” the doctor said and then left.
Teresa slowly woke to white walls and the sharp scent of disinfectant. Alone and groggy, it hit her. She was in a hospital.
When she was pregnant with Michael, life was quiet and hospital visits were rare. But this time, she seemed to be there constantly.
Teresa placed her hand over her belly and murmured, “My baby, you have to be alright.”
“Doctor,” Teresa called out weakly when the gynecologist walked in. She struggled to sit up, bracing herself on the bed. Then she asked, “Is my baby okay?”
The doctor stepped closer and replied, “You’re lucky. If your mother–in–law hadn’t brought you in when she did, you could have lost the
baby.”
Teresa froze and asked, “My mother–in–law? Which one? Irene?”
“I don’t know how many mothers–in–law you’ve got, but you wore a waist trainer at seven months pregnant. If you hadn’t come in when you did, your baby could’ve suffocated. Were you trying to risk your child’s life?”

Teresa lowered her head, cold sweat running down her back as the doctor lectured her.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know. I never thought the consequences would be this serious.”
“It is that serious, you know? How could you be so careless as a mom?” The doctor said with a sigh.
“You’re still young. Luckily, both you and your baby are tough enough to make it through.”
“I’m sorry,” Teresa apologized again, both to the doctor and silently to the baby inside her.
“Just get some rest for now. Once your test results are out, I’ll come back and talk to you. And make sure to let your husband know. Get ready to stay in the hospital.”
The doctor hurried out. Teresa was still rattled, glancing at her belly in fear. This time, it was her fault. She had almost killed her child.
‘What about next time?‘ she thought, her heart pounding. ‘Will I be this lucky again?‘ Teresa didn’t even dare to imagine it. Another chill of fear crept over her.
Before Teresa could get up, Irene burst in. Their eyes met, tense and unyielding. Without the waist trainer, Teresa’s baby bump was visible. There was no hiding it now.
Irene exploded and pressed, “You’re pregnant.”
Of all people, Irene was the last person Teresa wanted to tell about her pregnancy, but now she knew.
She didn’t deny it. She couldn’t hide it anymore. There was just no way.
“You’re tangled up with Jonathan while carrying another man’s bastard. You have no shame,” Irene snapped.
Teresa was stunned. As Teresa looked at her in confusion and disbelief, Irene stood over her with a proud, condescending glare.
“You should thank me for getting you admitted and saving your baby, even though you’re no longer my daughter–in–law. I’m not doing this for you. I don’t want Jonathan blaming me or you playing the victim later.”
Teresa suddenly let out a laugh. Seeing how calm and composed Teresa looked, Irene started to panic and asked, “What are you laughing
at?”
But Teresa just kept smiling. Irene snapped, “Stop laughing. What’s so funny?”
“I’m laughing at you. You’re unbelievably stupid,” Teresa said, her voice
full of scorn.
“Who are you calling stupid, you rude little brat?” Irene shot back.
Irene whipped out her phone, found Jonathan’s number, and hovered her finger over the call button.
“I’m sure Jonathan has no idea you’re pregnant. I’m telling him right now, so he can see what kind of two–faced cheater you are.”
Teresa remained calm and composed. “Go ahead, call him,” she said, cool as ice without a trace of panic.
Seeing how sure Teresa looked, Irene squinted, getting the feeling that something wasn’t right.
“How can you be so calm? Aren’t you afraid Jonathan will find out you’re carrying some other man’s bastard? He’d never raise a kid that’s not his,” Irene snapped.
“That’s enough. Are you done yet?” Teresa shot back, cutting her off.

“You keep calling the baby a bastard. Are you saying your son is just some random guy off the street?* Teresa shot back, her voice cold and mocking.
Irene froze. She glared at Teresa, eyes wide. “What do you mean by that?” she asked.
Teresa placed her hand firmly on her belly and added, “Let me make this clear. This baby is Jonathan’s child.”
“What did you just say?” Irene asked, her voice trembling.
‘No, that’s not possible,‘ Irene thought, her mind spinning. She blurted out, her face twisting in disbelief.
Irene’s fingers twitched with nerves, her face contorted in anger as she pointed at Teresa. “If that baby were Jonathan’s, he would’ve told his family. No way he’d keep it a secret,” Irene said.
That was why Irene was convinced this was Teresa’s child with another man.
“I was the one who told him not to say anything. You can come after me all you want, but I won’t ever give you a chance to hurt my baby,” Teresa said firmly.
“You’re being ridiculous. Why would I ever hurt Jonathan’s child?” Irene shot back, her voice rising.
“Because I don’t trust you as you don’t trust me,” Teresa replied coldly.
Irene’s face turned green with fury, and she was about to keep interrogating Teresa. The next second, on the other end of her phone, a cold voice rang out.
