Chapter 773
Lucas looked determined. He agreed to do a DNA test. All these years, he had wondered if Peggy was his mother or not.
A mother usually loved her child. But he had never felt that love. He grew up in a suffocating environment that he couldn’t avoid.
If the test proved Peggy wasn’t his blood, he would be free from these “fake” blood chains.
“I gave birth to Lucas, and he is my son. I’m sure about that. I won’t do a DNA test,” said Peggy.
“Just have Lucas and Evelyn do it. If she’s not his mother, the truth wins,” said Jonathan.
Peggy choked on silence. Jonathan turned to look at Lucas and asked, “What do you think? Is that okay for you?”
Lucas agreed with it and asked, “Mr. Lynn, can my hair be the sample?”
“Of course,” Jonathan replied.
Lucas yanked out a few strands of his hair and handed them to Jonathan. Evelyn did the same to herself and gave her hair to Jonathan.
Jonathan made a call, and his bodyguard came over. He handed the samples to him and instructed, “Find a reputable DNA testing center nearby to get the result urgently.”
“Yes, Mr. Lynn,” said the bodyguard.
Peggy looked very angry. These people all wanted to take her son away, especially Evelyn.
Ever since she was a child, all her relatives had compared her to Evelyn. They always said she wasn’t as good as her. Now, Evelyn even wanted to snatch Lucas away.
‘So will she give that worthless daughter back to me? On what grounds? Why is my child still inferior to hers?‘ Peggy thought.
“Evelyn, listen. Lucas is my son. Don’t you dare think about taking him from me,” Peggy said. Then she turned and walked away.
Lucas’s fingers were trembling on the spot. Teresa noticed and asked him, “Are you okay?”
“Don’t worry. It’s just my anxiety disorder acting up again,” Lucas said casually.
Teresa was a little shocked. ‘How does someone so warm carry this? His hand even trembled uncontrollably,‘ she wondered.
Lucas smiled faintly. “It’s okay. I’m used to it. Don’t worry about me,” he said.
He tried to steady it, and Evelyn’s hand closed over his shaking one gently.
“Once the DNA test result is out and shows you are my son, I’ll spend years making amends. This failure is mine. I’m so sorry,” Evelyn said.
Lucas couldn’t hold back his tears. Evelyn held his hand steadily and gently. Then Lucas’s hand stopped trembling gradually.
As he met her gaze, Lucas managed to stay calm. “Evelyn, let’s wait for the results first,” he said.
He hesitated. If the results indicated that he was not Evelyn’s son, his hope would turn into disappointment.
He’d already faced too many disappointments. He didn’t want to hurt Evelyn or Teresa.
Jonathan and Lucas exchanged phone numbers. Once the results were out, Jonathan promised he’d let Lucas know right away.

“Thank you, Mr. Lynn,” Lucas said.
“My pleasure. You’re my friend,” Jonathan replied.
Lucas smiled lightly and didn’t say anything else. They just had to wait for the results and then meet each other again.
Teresa and Evelyn got into the car. Evelyn leaned against Teresa’s shoulder and wiped away her tears, completely falling apart..
Evelyn said, “If he’s my son, it hurt me to see him having suffered so much. How did he end up like this?
“I always thought Peggy would only maltreat me, but I never imagined she’d be so cruel to Lucas, too. Just look at how scared he is.”

The more she thought about it, the worse she felt. She always had a soft heart beneath her bright surface. Teresa knew this truth–it was why life kept wounding Evelyn.
“Everything will be fine. If he is my brother, we’ll bring him home to Nareigh. You and Isabel can come back too. We could be neighbors,” Teresa said.
Evelyn shook her head. She looked at Teresa, her eyes tinged with guilt and self–blame. “Teresa, I’m sorry too. As your mom, I shouldn’t burden my pregnant daughter with this. It’s been hard for you.”
“Jonathan, thank you too,” Evelyn added.
“And Hannah… She’s such a poor girl. Peggy is awful. I’m just naive. She never changed. She still values sons over daughters. That poison never left her.” Evelyn said.
“Has this kind of thing happened before?” Teresa asked.
Evelyn explained, “Actually, Peggy aborted a daughter at a back–alley clinic years ago. She said she didn’t want girls.”
When Peggy got pregnant again, it was too late to abort safely. The doctor told her that if she had the abortion this time, she might never be able to have kids again.
“She got pregnant a week after I did. It was a coincidence that we had the same delivery day,” Evelyn said.
Teresa suddenly realized something. “Maybe she gave birth on the same day as you on purpose. She probably already knew she was having a girl and couldn’t abort the baby. So she was jealous of you, and then swapped your babies,” Teresa said.
Swapping babies was no small thing. There was no way something like that just happened suddenly. This could only mean that Peggy had been scheming for a long time.
Jonathan sat in the front passenger seat, glancing at Teresa. He agreed with Teresa.
Evelyn said, “But I never learned the baby’s gender. So how did she know I was having a boy?”
Teresa replied, “You’ll have to ask her about it yourself.”
Instead of dropping Evelyn off at a hotel, Jonathan suggested that she stay at his place. Evelyn felt it wasn’t good to say no, so she agreed.
The Maybach car drove into the residential complex. Evelyn was surprised to see Jonathan’s courtyard house.
As she looked around at the stunning, grandly decorated courtyard house, she couldn’t help but admire him.
“Jonathan, this house must’ve cost a fortune, right? Real estate in Jarisburg is very expensive, and this place is near the city center. How
much did it cost?” Evelyn asked.

“Not much. Have a rest,” Jonathan replied and offered her a glass of water.
“No way. This city–center palace must’ve bled you dry,” said Evelyn.
Teresa told Evelyn the truth. It cost 500 million.
Evelyn was extremely shocked. “500 million?” she marveled.
Back then, when Jonathan married Teresa, he barely had any money. Evelyn had thought Teresa was making a bad choice, so she didn’t even go to their wedding.
Thinking about all this, Evelyn felt very guilty. “Jonathan, even though you and Teresa are divorced now, I still need to apologize. Back then, I misjudged you. I didn’t know what a good man you were,” Evelyn said.
“And I even looked down on you for not having money and worried that you lacked ambition. I’m sorry,” Evelyn added.
“Evelyn, it was all in the past. I didn’t take it to heart,” Jonathan replied calmly.
Now that he’d made it this far, most things didn’t bother him anymore. Only matters of Teresa could affect her mood; other people’s opinions couldn’t.
