Chapter 751
Chapter 751
Donald stood by Jennifer’s hospital bed, guilt flooding his heart as he saw how pale she looked. He held her hand tightly, hoping the baby she was carrying would be alright.
He thought, ‘If the baby’s safe, I’ll apologize–hell, I’ll even beg Jonathan to cut Jennifer some slack and let her keep her medical license.‘
He was ready to resign for her. She’d worked her ass off for this job. If she wasn’t willing to quit, he’d take all the heat and blame, just to keep her and the baby safe.
Just then, someone knocked on the door, pulling Donald out of his thoughts.
David walked in. He was Donald’s colleague and the doctor who had examined Jennifer.
Donald rushed over. “David, how’s Jennifer?”
“Don’t worry. Jennifer hasn’t eaten all day, and she didn’t get much rest last night. She just passed out from exhaustion. She should wake up soon,” David replied.
Donald patted his chest, finally relieved. “That’s a relief. How’s the baby doing?”
“Jennifer’s not pregnant,” David replied.
The news hit Donald like a thunderclap. “That can’t be, David! Are you sure you didn’t make a mistake? Jennifer’s two months pregnant.”
“How is that possible? There’s nothing in Jennifer’s belly—she was never pregnant to begin with,” David said.
Donald still couldn’t accept it. He muttered to himself, “No way. That’s impossible. Jennifer told me she was pregnant, and she even showed me the medical report.”
He lost control for a moment and grabbed David’s hand. “You’ve been a doctor for years, and I know you’re a good man. Just tell me the truth–did Jennifer have a miscarriage because she was too stressed?”
“Come on, Donald, why would I lie to you? Jennifer really isn’t pregnant.” David pulled his hand back. “If you don’t believe me, just look at the report yourself.”
Donald snatched up the report and started going over it, line by line.
“Seems like you and Jennifer had a misunderstanding. Talk it over when she wakes up,” David sighed. “There’s nothing else, so I’ll leave you
two alone.”
Donald remained silent. He finished the report and sat there, frozen like an empty shell. Jennifer’s not pregnant,‘ he thought, his heart sinking, all the way to rock bottom.
Time crawled. Finally, Jennifer opened her eyes, still groggy. When she saw Donald sitting beside her bed, her mind slowly cleared. She dimly remembered passing out from exhaustion–she’d been busy and skipped meals to save a few bucks.
“You’re awake,” Donald said, his voice cold, with no hint of emotion.
Jennifer slowly sat up. When she saw the medical report in his hand, something clicked, and immediately, she snatched it away from him.
Her face turned deathly pale. ‘He knows it,‘ she thought, panic flooding her mind.
“Why?” Donald suddenly turned to face her, his eyes filled with accusation and exhaustion. “Why did you lie to me again?”

Jennifer’s shoulders trembled. She took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Donald.”
“Sorry doesn’t fix anything,” Donald said. He grabbed her shoulders, and his voice broke with emotion. “Why did you lie about being pregnant? Why do you keep lying to me? What have I done to deserve this?”
“I love you. I was just so afraid of losing you,” Jennifer choked out.
Donald slowly let go of her.
Jennifer was falling apart. “I was terrified you’d divorce me, so I lied. I never meant to deceive you. Everything I did was because I love you.
love you, so I let Teresa keep Mike a secret. Losing my job didn’t scare me as much as you finding out I faked the report. I was terrified you’d be disappointed, that you’d hate me, that you’d stop loving me.
“I just want to look good in your eyes, Donald. I care about you too much.”
Donald’s eyes were bloodshot with tears, and his gaze twisted into a mocking sneer. “You say you love me?”
Jennifer nodded with difficulty. She loved him, and she couldn’t imagine her life without him.
Donald let out a cold, bitter laugh. “So loving me gives you the right to lie to me? You tell me you’re pregnant, get my hopes up, and then smash them to pieces.
“Your so–called love is nothing but hurting me, hurting my family, and even your own. Is this what love means to you, Jennifer?”
Jennifer had never seen Donald lose it like this. She took a shaky breath and reached for his hand.
Donald just impatiently pulled his hand away–he was repulsed by her touch.
Jennifer looked down. “I’m sorry for hurting you. I was wrong.”
Donald lost it again. “No, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have married you. You know that? I had everything planned out. Since you care so much about your job, I was ready to beg Jonathan to keep you on. I was even gonna quit for you.
“Do you know how many times I’ve begged Jonathan for your sake? When that patient made a scene after your surgery mess, I went to him, begging for help. i swallowed my pride–threw away every bit of my dignity as a man–all for you.”
“I know,” Jennifer cried, her voice breaking, “Donald, please, just give me one more chance.”
“I’ve given you more chances than you deserve, and this is how you treat me? Jennifer, go hand in your resignation yourself. You don’t belong here anymore.” With that, Donald slammed the door behind him and stormed out.
“Donald!” Jennifer threw off the covers, jumped out of bed, and rushed after him. But all she saw was his fading back and the blur of doctors and nurses.
She dropped to the floor by the door, barefoot, covering her mouth as she sobbed in agony. ‘I’ve lost my career, and now I’ve lost my love. Why did it all come to this?‘ she thought, her heart shattering.
Suddenly, a handkerchief was held out in front of her. She looked up, her heart racing with hope. “Donald!”
But the person standing in front of her wasn’t Donald.
