Michael rubbed his eyes again. “Jennifer is always mean to Mommy. I just don’t want Mommy to feel sad.”
Jonathan was furious and heartbroken, and he couldn’t help feeling sorry for Teresa. ‘With a sister like that, Teresa’s just asking for trouble. She’s always so stubborn and proud. She would rather suffer in silence, even lying to me about the car,‘ he thought.
“Don’t cry,” Jonathan said softly, comforting Michael. “I’ll buy your mom another car.”
“Really? You really mean it?” Michael’s eyes lit up.
“I’ll get it for her today,” Jonathan promised.
“Awesome!” Michael cheered, spinning around with excitement.
“Alright, stop spinning,” Jonathan said, unable to hold back a laugh as he gently held Michael’s head still. Looking him in the eye, he added, “Whatever happens to your mom, just come tell me. I’ll always keep you
both safe.”
“Roger that, Daddy!” Michael said with a playful salute.
On the way, Teresa got a call from Evelyn and headed over to the airport to pick her up.
Evelyn burst into tears and hugged Teresa tightly. “They’re saying your sister isn’t my real daughter. What is going on? I don’t believe it. She’s Hannah. I could never mistake my own child.”
Teresa gently let go of Evelyn, keeping her voice steady. “Let’s wait until we see her. Then we’ll go to the hospital and get another test done.”
Then she glanced at Benny, who was standing nearby. “Benny, thanks for bringing my mom back.”
Benny smiled. “I didn’t really do much. I just helped Miriam figure out where your mom’s shop was. She said it was in Holphiamil District, but she didn’t know the exact street, so I just spent a little time looking for it.”
Teresa sighed. “Seriously, you two could’ve just asked me.”
Benny shrugged. “Miriam said we couldn’t ask you–she didn’t want you to find out about this.”
Since Teresa didn’t have her car, she and Evelyn got into Benny’s.
On the way, Benny said, “Now that Mike is Jonathan’s kid, Jonathan owes me 300 thousand dollars. We made a bet–he didn’t believe Mike was his son, but I called it. I just knew it. My gut’s never wrong.”
“I’m really sorry for lying to you,” Teresa said sincerely.

“Seriously,” Benny said with a sigh. “Mike is such a cute kid. Why hide the truth?”
Teresa didn’t explain further. “Just drop us off up ahead.”
When they got to Jennifer’s apartment complex, Benny turned the car around. “I’ll just drive you guys inside. It’ll be easier for you to get there.” He made sure not to leave them by the roadside.
Once they arrived, Teresa helped Evelyn out and thanked Benny again.
Benny grinned. “No need to thank me. I’ve got to go find Jonathan and cash in my 300 thousand… No, 600 thousand dollars. I already gave him 300 thousand before, so now he owes me double.”
Teresa said, “That’s between you guys. Just drive safe, okay?”
Meanwhile, Jennifer was at home, eating alone. Donald was working late at the hospital and wouldn’t be
back.
She’d been eating alone so many times that it felt normal now. Marriage had worn down that fiery love into something flat. Suddenly, she felt tired and didn’t know how much longer she could last.
Just yesterday, she tried to initiate intimacy, but Donald had turned her down, saying it wasn’t safe for her in the early stages of pregnancy. She wondered if he truly meant to protect her or just no longer wanted her.
Jennifer didn’t know how much longer she could keep up this lie. ‘If he won’t touch me, how am I supposed to get pregnant? What am I supposed to do?‘ she thought.
A knock came at the door. She went to open it, expecting Donald, but found Teresa and Evelyn instead. Jennifer asked, confused, “What brings you both here?”
