Jonathan smirked. “And what’s that price supposed to be? Should I give your uncle a call? You’re only this cocky because you’ve got David backing you Without him, you’re nothing.”
When he saw Lysander’s face change, Jonathan pulled out his phone. “Your uncle’s been wanting to work with me ever since I set up a branch here. I’ve got his number right here.”
He pulled up David’s number and held the screen up to Lysander’s face. “This one, right?”
Just when Jonathan’s finger hovered over the call button, Lysander panicked and grabbed his hand. “It’s nothing, really. No need to bother my uncle. I’ll just stay in the hospital for a few days and rest up.”
Jonathan put his phone away. “Teresa’s already quit. You should leave the school too. You’re not fit to be principal.”
Lysander started to panic. “I won’t bother Ms. Johnston anymore, okay? I worked hard for this job. You’re a big boss, you shouldn’t get involved in my business.”
Jonathan’s voice was cold. “Teresa and the other female teachers you harassed have already reported you. I’m just letting you know. Think about your wife and kids for once. Don’t you feel any shame?” With that, he turned and walked out.
Teresa picked up Michael and sent Jonathan the money for the car. It had been ages since she’d driven a Porsche. There were a bunch of new fuel cards in the car. Once again, she owed him. It seemed she could never pay him back.
Jonathan called her. “You’re on First Avenue, aren’t you?”
“How do you know?”
“I can see you. My car’s right behind yours.”
Teresa’s eyes flickered. She spotted Jonathan’s Maybach in her rearview mirror.
Jonathan said over the phone, “There’s a supermarket nearby. Want to go shopping?”
If she said no now, it’d just make her look guilty. “Sure, I need to pick up some things anyway,” Teresa replied. “I’ll park over by the lot.”
She parked in the underground A1 section, while Jonathan parked somewhere else. When Teresa got upstairs, Jonathan said he’d take the elevator to the supermarket entrance and wait for her there.
Teresa reached the entrance first and told Michael, “Later, Mr. Lime is coming to shop with us.”
Michael threw both hands up in excitement. “Yay! Mr. Lime and I are buddies, so I can buy tons of stuff now!”
Just as he finished, the elevator doors opened. Michael saw Jonathan step out and ran over, shouting, “Mr. Lime!”
Jonathan bent down and scooped him up. Michael scampered ahead on his little legs, Jonathan pushed the shopping cart, and Teresa walked beside him. This was the kind of life she’d always dreamed of To Teresa, it felt like a dream.
Jonathan was soaking in the warmth of this peaceful moment. This was exactly the kind of life he’d always dreamed of. If he had a child of his own, he’d
be even happier right now.
“Mr. Lime, I want a toy. Will you buy one for me?”
“Which one?” Jonathan grinned, slipping his hands under Michael’s arms and lifting him up high so he could grab whichever one he wanted.
Michael stretched out his arms and picked the fanciest, most expensive one from the top. “Mr. Lime, you’re so generous. Thank you.”
“No need to thank me,” Jonathan said with a smile. When he turned around, Teresa was nowhere to be seen. He glanced around and spotted her picking

out vegetables.
With one hand pushing the cart and the other holding Michael, Jonathan walked over to her. “Look at you. You’re even cooking now?”
“Don’t underestimate me,” Teresa replied, patting the perfect cabbage she’d just picked. “I can totally handle stir–frying now”
“I can vouch for that!” Michael said proudly, lifting his chin. “Ms. Johnston is a real chef now.” He flashed Teresa a big grin.
Teresa smiled back at Michael.
Jonathan took in the scene, feeling something he couldn’t quite put into words.
