Chapter 14
Cara’s POV
Anna hesitated, then forced a smile.
“Cara, I’m doing this for your own good. This city… isn’t for
Mother?
you.”
I actually laughed. “You already threw me away once. Now you’re doing it again? You really
are a wonderful mother.”
I didn’t wait for her reply.
I turned and walked away, hailing a cab just outside the hospital.
In the back seat, I sat quietly.
From my purse, I pulled out a small milk candy, unwrapped it, and placed it on my tongue.
The cab driver glanced at me through the rearview mirror. I could feel his curiosity. To
him, I must’ve looked calm, composed–elegant in my pale dress, untouchable. But beneath
the glow of the city lights, my skin was nearly translucent, and I probably looked like one wrong move might shatter me.
He smiled kindly.
“You like sweets, miss?”
I turned toward the window, the wind tugging gently at my hair.
“Yes,” I said softly. “Candy makes things… less bitter.”
Back at the hospital, I knew Anna stood frozen as the cab pulled away.

And then–someone called out to her.
“Mrs. Anna.”
It was Edward, the doctor.
She stepped toward him quickly, that desperate glimmer in her eyes..
“Doctor Edward, you know so many people. Can you help us find the healer again? Please, Lucy needs her.”
Edward smiled.
“Actually, I do know her. I could arrange an introduction.”
Anna’s face lit up.
“Thank you! Truly, thank you!”
But there was something in his eyes. Not kindness. Something darker. And when he glanced
down the road I’d taken, a twisted grin curled on his lips.
“That was your older daughter, right? From the countryside? I didn’t expect her to be that
beautiful. I thought I was seeing a goddess.”
Anna’s expression turned cold. Flat. Emotionless.
Third POV.
The Johnson Estate. That night.
Anna sat waiting on the velvet/couch, draped in her silk robe like a picture–perfect housewife. She’d aged gracefully over the years, ever the Southern beauty turned socialite–thanks to the wealth and power she inherited after marrying David.
When the front door opened, she stood to greet him. A maid let him in.
“Darling, you’re late tonight,” she said with a radiant smile, helping him remove his jacket.

Chapter 14
David wasn’t like my father. Mark had been gentle. David was sleek, flirtatious–a polished Alpha whose charm only grew with his influence.
“I had a business dinner,” he said.
But I knew she caught it–Anna’s nostrils flared. The scent of perfume lingered on his collar. His young Omega assistant’s, no doubt.
Her voice dipped, sharp beneath the silk.
“You were with that Omega again, weren’t you?”
David frowned. “You’re paranoid again. Lucy’s sick. Focus on her, not on drama. I’m tired.”
He turned to go upstairs.
“I can get the healer,” she said evenly.
David stopped. Turned back. Grabbed her shoulders.
“You’re amazing. I knew I could count on you. Anna, you’re my everything.”
He kissed her, smooth and full of sweet nothings. And like always, she melted.
She smiled and tapped his chest playfully.
“But I have one condition. Fire that Omega.”
David laughed. “Done. I’ll dismiss her tomorrow.”
And then–he swept her into his arms.
Cara’s POV
The next day.
I got a call from Anna.

Chapter 14
Her tone was soft. Almost… maternal.
“Cara, I was wrong yesterday. Mommy made all your favorite dishes. Come home, just for tonight.”
Cathy peeked over the kitchen counter, eyes wary.
“Don’t go. That woman’s too far gone. She worships David like a dog in heat.”
“I’m busy,” I said coolly into the phone.
I was about to hang up-
Then she said:
“When you were born, your father buried a coming–of–age gift for you. I’ve dug it up. Come
home. It’s yours now.”
My fingers tensed.
She knew exactly where to strike.
At the Johnson Estate.
David and Lucy weren’t home.
Anna really had prepared a feast–and right in the center of the table sat a dusty, hand–labeled wine bottle. I recognized the handwriting instantly.
Coming–of–age wine, my father had scrawled across the label.
He hadn’t been educated, but everything he gave me, he built with his own two hands.
He wasn’t like David–polished and power–hungry. My father was honest. Loving.
I reached out, gently brushing my fingers across the old label.
For a moment, I let myself remember what it felt like to be adored.

Anna, radiant, poured the wine into two bowls
“Come on, Cara. Cheers.”
ibited my gaze.
“How did my father die?”
Her hand shook. Wine sloshed dangerously close to the rim.
“He was sick she answered too quickly. “You wouldn’t understand–you’re not a doctor.”
I downed the wine in one go. My smile turned glacial.
“I’ll find out.”
I stood.
That’s when Edward walked in.
I frowned. “Who are you?”
He looked like a gentleman, but his eyes didn’t lie. They raked over me–hungry, greasy.
Anna set her bowl down.
“Cara, this is Edward. He knows the healer. He can help Lucy.”
I stared at her. Really?
Then Anna dropped the last of the mask.
“Sleep with him,” she said flatly. “Do that, and Lucy will be saved.”
