Chapter 8
At that very moment, I had already left the manor far behind.
Heading toward the place closest to his heart.
A week ago, I’d awakened in that cage.
The first person I saw was Lilith.
In exchange for my complete disappearance, I bargained with her for a feral vampire to stage my death.
Only this way could I escape Zephyr’s control forever.
Only this way would Zephyr spend eternity drowning in guilt.
Watching from a distance as Zephyr threw himself from the window, the satisfaction I’d expected never came. Instead, my heart filled with endless cold.
I’d thought I’d never see Zephyr again.
But on a quiet afternoon, just as I’d settled into my new life, he appeared at my door.
Almost instantly, my throat felt crushed by an invisible hand.
Instinctive fear and hatred made my legs heavy as lead, unable to move.
Before I could shut the door, Zephyr pulled me into his arms.
“Thank god, Isadora. You’re still here.”
“I’m sorry. I was wrong about everything before. I did so many things that disappointed you. I’m sorry…”
I lost count of how many times he whispered “sorry” in my ear.
But the coldness in my heart never thawed.
My former lover now felt like a monster with razor fangs, making me shake uncontrollably.
Noticing my violent trembling, Zephyr slowly released me, his eyes hollow with loss.
Without waiting for me to speak, he dropped to his knees.
The proud man had never knelt so formally, not even when he’d proposed.
“I was wrong before. Lilith deceived me, but you can be sure–I’ve already made her pay!”
“If you still hate me, hit me, curse me, make me do anything you want.”
“Just come back with me, please? We’ll go home and have our own child. No one will ever disturb us again.”
He grabbed my hands, using them to strike his body while apologizing over and over.
I jerked my hands away and laughed bitterly,
“Zephyr, go back?”
“Can we really go back? Or does your precious pet need another breeding dog, so you want me to come birth one for you?”
The words left my lips before I realized I was shaking violently.
Zephyr’s eyes filled with panic.
“No… it’s not like that! I never thought that way, Isadora. Don’t be afraid of me, please…”

Meeting his desperate gaze, I said coldly:
“Zephyr, I hate you. I hate you more than anything!”
“From the moment our daughter died, there’s been no going back for us! I pray every day that you’ll stay far away from me, that you’ll never find me. But why? Why do you insist on haunting me, never letting me go?”
“I’m begging you–please, just leave me alone!”
My tears fell like broken pearls as the words poured out.
Zephyr helplessly tried to comfort me, to tell me he understood his mistakes.
But when he heard me whisper through gritted teeth, “I wish you were dead,” he finally let go in despair.
For a long time after that day, Zephyr never appeared in my life again.
I built a memorial for our daughter.
Praying that in some distant next life, we could meet again and do all the things I’d planned but never had the chance to do.
Until one afternoon, I received a letter.
From Zephyr’s manor.
On a sun–drenched afternoon, he had quietly walked into the Feeding Grounds.
I calmly burned the letter to ash.
As the flames danced, I felt a lightness I’d never known before.
In my mind’s eye, I could see our daughter smiling and reaching out to me.
I smiled back, filled with peace.
And firmly took her tiny hand.
