Chapter 26

I shrugged and ducked under her arm. He says I cause too much trouble to be left alone for long.”

She gave me a yellow smile. Well then let’s stick close together on this hike.”

Not a chance! Sir! Let’s go into the snow!To avoid Emma, I stood close to Nicholas as he led us outside, insisting we stay in a neat line

Of course, my plans to stay close to the teacher failed when I saw a small rabbit slightly off the trail, and tried to sneak up to it

Come here, you’re so cute! I wonder if River will let me get a pet bunny,I thought aloud and frowned when it got spooked and ran away

I glanced behind me and sent Emma the stink eye. Leave me alone, I’m not in the mood to deal with you right now.”

Emma crossed her beefy arms. Why are you acting all tough? She asked and glared at me. I should-”

Should what? You should shave, all that hair under your nose is very distracting.I told her and stood on a small smooth rock

Emma looked furious, her face turning bright red. I turned my back on her and raised a hand. Now go away, you’re loud, and Mr. Nicholas is going to see that I snuck-I gasped as two hands landed on my back and shoved me forward

It would have been fine, if not for how slippery everything was. If not for the snow, would have fallen forward and caught myself before my face smacked into the ground

With the snow, however, I slid, and fell right off a small slope, which made me land and skid into the forest, head smacking into a rock

I groaned and sat up, rubbing the back of my head. I looked up the small cliff with sharp and slippery rocks, seeing the large girl run away from the scene of the crime

I started to stand, and gasped, falling forward and trying to grab something before I hit my head again. A cry left my lips when my hand slid across a sharp rock, slicing it open

A cold gust of wind blew through the woods as I clutched my hand to my chest, beginning to feel like a character in, I shouldn’t be alive‘

I took a deep breath and slowly lifted my foot, to see if it was simply sprained or perhaps something worse. I gently touched it with my free hand and moved it ever so slightly

Well, at least it’s not broken, I decided and frowned at the pulsing pain in my hand. Emma, you’re so dead when I get out of this ditch

Since I was unable to walk, I decided crawling through the snow was the only way I would be able to move. I didn’t dare stop hopping on one foot, not when falling was what got me into this mess in the first place

After about half an hour, I realized Emma must have spouted some lie about me going back to the hotel, because otherwise Mr. Nicholas would have surely noticed I was missing

Or, I hoped he would notice

I had ripped my shirt to try to wrap my hand up, and it had worked at least a little. I was cold though, and now just wanted out of the snow

I guess this is what I got for going off on my own, but, then again, if Emma hadn’t pushed me, nothing would have happened

So, none of it was my fault, or, that’s what I was telling myself. It seemed like I was always getting into something, or something was happening around

  1. me

Sometimes it was a good thing, but many of a time, like this one, it was horrible

I sighed and pushed myself over a large root, before resting against a tree. Is anyone alive out there?!I yelled and licked my dry and cold lips. annoyed when I was greeted by silence. How rude!I shouted into the wind and scoffed

I would kill for some of Dune’s hot chocolate right nowI thought and shivered, snow melting from my body heat, and making my clothes <rart to damp

My shoes were already wet, my socks starting to become soaked. I pushed myself, pausing to yeil out, only to be noticed by birds, who new away spooked

Chapter 26

It felt like minutes and eternity all in the same, and my stomach growled angrily, hating the cold as much as I did. We’ll be more careful next time. I agreed with my stomach and coughed

Hand aching, foot throbbing, I took a short break, which turned into a long one. Surely, once they got to the hotel, someone would notice

Faith or Shade-

The wind blew around me, and I ducked my head, face red and painful from the chill of winter

Maybe they forgot about you, the wind whispered. I took a breath and shook my head. That would be ridiculous –

A howl made fear stutter in my heart, and I looked around, afraid. You’ve got to be kidding me, please tell me there isn’t any large hungry animals around here

I bit down into my lip as the forest grew shaded, and I gazed around, scared. I felt my teeth chatter as I tried to curl into myself. I wish I was back home, I want River, I was embarrassed at my own thoughts and heard a rustle
