I looked up and saw Marcus coming towards me, surrounded by a crowd.
The chatter behind him vanished immediately.
Marcus and I grew up together.
When we were five or six, our elders arranged a betrothal for us.
Whenever someone bullied me, he was the first to stand up for me.
When he made mistakes and was punished, I was the first to plead for him.
Before today, no one would doubt that I was Marcus’s true love.
But today, on my twenty–second birthday, he brought another woman.
Lily Blake, frail and slender, leaned against him like a delicate white flower.
Marcus smiled, whispering something intimately in her ear.
