I was just climbing off Asher’s lap with my face flushed, when Corey called.
Asher leaned against the window, eyeing my swollen lips with amusement.
My neck burning hot, I grabbed my phone and moved to the window.
“Corey,” I answered, my breathing still’a bit unsteady. “What is it?”
His voice was urgent. “Miss Bennett, Mr. Castro says you have thirty minutes to get to the usual spot. Otherwise, he’s really going through with the engagement to Miss Pinto.”
I couldn’t help but laugh softly.
The night was quiet. Asher probably heard everything.
He set his glass on the nightstand with a deliberately loud thud.
Corey heard it through the phone. “Miss Bennett, is someone with you this late?”
In the past, I’d always bent over backwards to accommodate Lawrence. Dropping everything when he called.
I’d always been unfailingly polite to his assistant too.
But those days were over.
“Corey, my personal life is none of your business,” I said calmly.
“And let me be clear–Lawrence and I ended our engagement. We have no connection anymore. Whoever he wants to marry,
that’s his business.”
Corey immediately panicked.
“Miss Bennett, don’t make a rash decision you’ll regret. Tomorrow is the engagement party. Tonight’s your last chance to get
him back.”
“I don’t need or want that opportunity,” I replied coolly. “By the way, did you give Lawrence what I left with you?”
Corey fell silent.
The box had been taken by Viola two days ago. He hadn’t stopped her, given her status.
“Assistant Adams, I’m only saying this once. Make sure that box gets to Lawrence. Personally.”
When he spoke again, his tone had become excessively polite. “Miss Bennett, it will be better if you delivered it to Mr. Castro yourself.”
“As I said, we’re done. I won’t be seeing him again.” I paused, exhaling a long breath.
