Lawrence threw a party before his engagement.
Viola wasn’t there. Just his usual pack of drinking buddies.
After several rounds of drinks, everyone was getting sloppy. Someone suddenly brought up Kristin.
“Out of all Lawrence’s girls, Kristin was definitely the hottest.”
“Facts. No contest.”
“If Lawrence hadn’t called dibs, man, I’d have gone after her myself.”
“Get in line, buddy.”
The jokes kept getting cruder.
At some point, Lawrence had set down his glass. He leaned back against the couch, staring at the group without blinking.
The chatter gradually died down.
“Uh, Lawrence, we were just messing around.”
“Too much tequila, you know? Don’t take it seriously.”
Lawrence’s lips curved in a cold smile. “Funny you mention her. Just reminded me – Kristin Bennett. Is she dead or something? Haven’t heard a peep from her in ages.”
His voice was ice–cold yet casual. As if he’d only just remembered she existed.
Like it wouldn’t matter if she was dead.
The room fell silent.
His assistant Corey jumped in with a nervous laugh.
“Mr. Castro, my bad. I forgot to tell you just a few days ago, Miss Bennet asked me to deliver something to you. Said it was
valuable.”
“I figured she was trying to win you back, so I hinted at it. So it didn’t escalate to you.”
Lawrence turned his cool gaze toward his assistant, a small smile still playing on his lips.
“Well, well, Corey. You’re getting bold.”
Corey’s face went pale. He shot up from the couch. “Mr. Castro, I—”
“Since when do you make decisions about my business?”
“You’re right, completely out of line. I apologize.” The assistant bowed repeatedly, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead.

Lawrence looked down, habitually turning the ring on his middle finger.
“Call her. Tell her she has thirty minutes to get here.”
The assistant blinked in confusion. “Sir?”
Lawrence turned to face the dark night outside the window.
“If she doesn’t make it in time, tomorrow I really will get engaged to Viola.”
