Chapter 30
Another year, another visit to my mother’s grave.
Asher and I flew to New York to visit her.

Her photograph smiled at me, just as she had in life.
I placed flowers and share with her about everything that had happened in recent months.
Only when dusk fell did I reluctantly leave.
At the bottom of the hill, we ran into Lawrence. He looked haggard and down on his luck.
I’d heard the Castro family had completely given up on him.
After all, he was nothing but dead weight now as a drunk and a gambler.
“Kristin.” He stared at me with desperate eyes, taking a few steps forward before stopping himself.
“Mr. Castro. Did you need something?” I asked coolly.
But I still felt a pang of regret inside.
I remembered how he used to be the golden boy, surrounded by a crowd of admirers.
People had orbited around him like planets around the sun.
Now, he was alone. All those so–called friends had vanished.
He brought this on himself.
Lawrence stared at me for a long time, then looked at Asher. My husband stood beside me, his arm firmly around my waist.
He’s tall and strong, every inch the man Lawrence could never be.
Lawrence’s expression twisted with bitterness. “Kristin, could I talk to you alone? Just ask Mr. Thorne to step aside for a
moment.”
I squeezed Asher’s hand. “He’s my husband. There’s nothing he can’t hear. Whatever you need to say, say it here.”
Lawrence gave a pained smile. “Kristin, I always thought that if I apologized and promised to make up for everything, you’d
come back to me.”
“I always believed you were the only one who would stay by my side forever.”
The guilt on Lawrence’s face was genuine. So was his regret and remorse.
But it was all too late and completely meaningless now.
“Move forward, Lawrence. Don’t look back anymore.”

With that, I took Asher’s hand and walked away.
After walking some distance, Asher casually remarked, “Mrs. Thorne still has quite the effect on men.”
“Of course I do,” I flipped my hair and winked at him. “Always has been.”

I stopped walking, rose on my tiptoes to kiss him. “Otherwise, how could I knocked you off your feet and you wouldn’t marry anyone but me?”
Asher smiled and openly admitted, “Yeah, you drove me crazy. Still do. And I don’t think I’ll ever get enough.”
I couldn’t help laughing, throwing myself into his arms as he held me close.
The sunlight was perfect, a gentle breeze ruffling my hair.
Mom, can you see me?
I’m happy now. Really, really happy.
