I stayed silent, listening to him while dabbing antiseptic on his wounds.
“Kristin?” Asher called my name several times before I looked up.
In his eyes, I could clearly see my reflection–and my red–rimmed eyes.
Asher reached out, tenderly caressing fny cheek.
I pushed his hand away, my hands trembling uncontrollably. “You put yourself in danger. Did you ever consider what would happen if they’d killed you the moment they got you?”
He pulled me into his arms, covering my face with soft kisses and wispered, “I’m sorry. I only regret not thinking it through and putting you in danger.”
“It won’t happen again. I promise. From now on, I’ll talk to you first. About everything. Okay?”
The tears I’d been holding back spilled over. I buried myself in his arms. “Asher…”
“I’m here,” he answered.
“Asher…”
“I’m here.”
I called his name over and over. And each time he patiently responded, until I cried myself to sleep in his arms.
When I woke, a warm lamp glowed beside the bed. Asher was sitting beside me. “You’re awake.”
I immediately flung myself into his arms.
“Are you hungry? I can have dinner brought up.”
Instead of answering, I tilted my head to look at him. “Asher.”
“Yes?”
“I saw the photographs in that room at the end of the hallway.”
I kissed his jaw lightly, my tear–stained eyes now filled with deep joy. “You’ve liked me for a long time, haven’t you?”
In moments of danger, instinctive reactions never lie.
Not his, and not mine.
I’d felt his affection and care everywhere, glimpsed his devotion in those photos.
But the heartbreak from my past had kept me from facing my feelings.
Only today’s danger made me realize how much it would hurt if he never knew how I felt.

Asher lowered his head, giving me a long and tender kiss.
“Yes,” he said, his eyes brimming with love. “Kristin, I love you. I’ve loved you for a very long time.”
“But I was supposed to say it first.”
The subtle scent of pine that belonged only to him surrounded me. Asher’s embrace was warm and reassuring.
He whispered against my lips, “I love you, babe.”
I closed my eyes as tears slipped down’my cheeks. “I love you too, Asher.”
He leaned down, pressing me into the soft mattress.
As the moon shifted westward, the room filled with lovers‘ whispers and moan filled the silence.
