Chapter 26
A month later, I heard news about Dave again.
Two weeks ago, his already crumbling company finally went bankrupt.
Right after that, he caught my stepmother in bed with another man.
The shock gave Dave a stroke. He would spend the rest of his life bedridden and helpless.
The Bennetts had finally fallen apart, and they could no longer threaten or disgust me.
Hearing this news, I felt an immense weight lift from my shoulders.
Just then, Asher returned home to take me out to dinner.
But halfway there, something felt off. A strange odor filled the car–something that made me nauseous.
I frowned and turned to Asher.
He was already looking at me. Our eyes met and we both understood immediately.
I held my breath and pressed the window button.
As expected, the windows were locked and wouldn’t open.
I looked at the driver.
Asher’s two regular drivers were unavailable–one had a family emergency, the other had food poisoning. This man was a
substitute.
Asher’s expression darkened. “Who sent you?”
The driver remained silent, but the car accelerated. The security vehicle behind us also sped up, trying to force us to stop.
Asher had alerted security the moment he sensed something wrong.
The driver floored it, taking a different downhill route at the approaching fork.
The two vehicles raced, neither gaining the advantage.
But the gas inside the car made my thoughts foggy. I could only cling to Asher’s hand
“Don’t be afraid, Kristin. I’m here,” he squeezed my hand reassuringly.
Just as he finished speaking, the car crashed into a large boulder.
Before losing consciousness, I felt Asher’s arms wrap tightly around me, shielding me with his body.
