The black Rolls–Royce sped through traffic.
Lawrence’s expression cold as he dialed my number.
“The number you’ve reached is currently switched off. Please try again later.”
He tried twice more with the same result.
Lawrence’s face grew colder.
“Take me to the Bennett house,” he ordered.
The driver made a sharp U–turn at the next intersection and raced toward my home.
When they arrived, Dave and my stepmother Wendy Belial greeted him with bright smiles.
Lawrence didn’t bother with pleasantries. “Where’s Kristin?”
Dave and Wendy exchanged glances.
My marriage to the Thorne family was still under wraps. Asher had explicitly forbidden any mention of it until after the
ceremony.
So no one in New York knew I was already in Los Angeles preparing for my wedding.
Dave could only sigh and shake his head with feigned helplessness. “Lawrence, you know how much your breakup hurt Kristin. Now that you’re getting engaged, she’s even more upset. She left weeks ago to travel and clear her head.”
“As for where she went? She wouldn’t tell us. Her phone’s off. Honestly, I have no idea where she is.”
Lawrence knew the Bennetts wouldn’t dare lie to him.
The family was struggling financially, dependent on the Castro family’s connections. Dave would have loved nothing more than to see me marry Lawrence.
So there was only one explanation.
Our breakup and his engagement to Viola had truly broken me. I’d become so disillusioned that I couldn’t face the whispers in
New York.
So I’d fled on a solo trip to escape it all.
Lawrence remembered my devastated expression the day we broke up.
Something twinged in his chest.
Maybe his feelings for me were different from what he felt for other women after all.

When it came down to it, no one could really replace me. And perhaps he liked me more than he’d admitted to himself.
Still, I’d returned the Jewelry Box and disappeared without a trace. And I’d even blocked his number.
That irritated him.
When I came back, begging for reconciliation–he’d make sure to teach me a lesson
The thought softened Lawrence’s expression slightly.
Given my personality, my little tantrum should be ending soon.
He would wait patiently.
