“These past few nights, I keep waking up at midnight…” Simon’s voice cracked. “I dream of you covered in blood, asking why I
betrayed you…”
I looked away, but the memories hit like a wave.
“Just give me one last chance…”
Then–boom. He yanked out a folding knife and stabbed his own thigh before I could even blink.
Blood spilled fast. He winced but managed a twisted smile. “This one’s for the first lash.”
He raised the knife again, aiming for the other leg. “I’ll pay back all ninety–nine lashes.”
My eyes shot wide. I ripped off the security chain and grabbed his wrist.
The blood smell hit hard, making my head spin.
For a second, I didn’t know if I felt hate or heartbreak–just this crushing weight in my chest.
Simon clung to my leg, tears pouring down his face. He looked wrecked.
“I swear I’ll spend my whole life making this right… If you want my life, take it.”
His blood puddled around him. That face I once loved was nothing but desperation now.
I felt so drained–for a second, I almost thought about forgiving him…
Then I saw her.
Nancy stood in the doorway, pregnant belly out, eyes full of venom.
Reality slapped me back.
No matter how sweet the past felt, his betrayal was real.
Once a cheater, always a cheater.
I stared him down, face ice–cold. “I don’t want your life. Or your redemption. You’re done. Get out.”
Simon’s face drained, but before he could say a word, Nancy stormed in, clutching her belly like it was some kind of shield.
Her eyes were wild. She snatched a vase off the shoe rack and hissed, “You shameless bitch! Simon’s on his knees and you’re still
playing queen?”
“Shut up!” Simon snapped.
Nancy flinched. The vase crashed to the floor, shards flying everywhere.

She stared at him like he’d just slapped her–oh, wait.

Simon stood shaky, gripping his bleeding leg, eyes blazing. “If you hadn’t screwed up stealing, none of this would’ve happened!
If I knew how dumb you were, I wouldn’t have gone near you!”
He turned to me, eyes desperate. “Heidi, it was all Nancy. She came onto me! I’d never have cheated if not for her—I’ve only ever
loved you!”
I stared down at him, disgusted.
Nancy looked like she was about to crack. “Simon! You–you said before-”
Before she could finish, Simon kicked her. Hard.
“Shut up! Don’t say another word in front of Heidi!”
Nancy stumbled, her perfect hair now a total mess.
She grabbed her stomach and let out this dramatic scream. “Simon! I’m carrying your baby!”
She yanked up her dress, showing off a slight bump.
Then her hand pressed it–and the bump collapsed like deflated air.
The whole room went still.
Simon’s eyes went wide. “You…”
“Where’s the baby?” I blurted.
