Chapter 6
The judge gave a nod, and the bailiffs yanked Simon and Nancy out without another word.
After the trial, Clark drove me home–not to that haunted villa, but to his sleek apartment downtown.
My body was wrecked. Blood had soaked through my clothes again.
Clark looked completely shaken. He helped me onto the couch like I might break.
“Doctor’s on the way.”
I saw that crease between his brows and reached up to smooth it out.
“I’m okay. Just surface stuff.”
He caught my hand, voice rough.
“I should’ve found you sooner.”
“It’s not too late.” I leaned into his shoulder. “This time, we found each other.”
In my past life, after they locked me up, it was nothing but pain.
Following Simon’s orders, the inmates used cold tools to destroy my uterus.
When the prison doctor told me I’d never have kids, I didn’t cry–I was already empty.
Then chaos exploded outside.
“Mr. Johnston! You can’t go in!”
The infirmary door slammed open.
Clark stormed in, bloodied, with guards down behind him.
His eyes went red the second he saw me.
“Heidi, I’m so sorry. That bastard blocked everything–I didn’t even know you were in here until this morning!”
His voice cracked. He dropped to his knees, hands shaking, reaching out but too scared to touch me.
That’s when I saw it–his right hand. One finger gone, still bleeding.
“What happened…?”
He wrapped his jacket around me.
“Don’t worry. I’m getting you out.”

Chapter 6
Sirens wailed across the prison.
Clark carried me through gunfire. Our blood left a trail behind us.
“Put me down… you don’t have to…” My voice was barely audible.
He didn’t say a word. Just ran faster.
We hit a dead end. Flashlights lit up the walls.
Clark pulled me close.
“Heidi, I lo—”
Boom.
The blast swallowed his words. He covered me with his body as the heat rushed in.
Back in the now.
“What is it?”
Clark wiped my cheeks–I hadn’t even noticed the tears.-
The ring on his thumb caught the light.
The same finger he’d lost for me.
“Just remembered something.” I smiled through the tears and leaned in.
The doctor showed up soon after and patched me up.
When he saw my back, Clark’s fists tightened till his knuckles cracked.
“I’ll make them pay.”
looked like a storm was coming.
deezed his hand.
“Don’t get your hands dirty. Let the law handle it.”
After the doctor left, Clark insisted on applying the ointment himself.
It was cool on my skin, but his fingers burned as they moved over each scar.
“Does it hurt?” His voice was low, tight with rage.
I shook my head, but he kept going.
“When I found you last time… you were hurt too…”

Chapter 6
His voice just stopped–like the memory hit too hard.
I turned and wrapped my arms around him, head resting on his shoulder.
“It’s over now. All of it.”
He held me like he never wanted to let go.
“This time, no one’s laying a finger on you.”
After Simon and Nancy got hauled off, I really thought it was over.
