hapter 95
After a busy day with nothing to gain, Rebecca dragged herself back to the rental house. Her limbs were numb and weary after a day of hunting for a job, but all her efforts went for naught. Despite her impressive qualifications, the hurdle for her failed interview, without exception, was that she had a criminal record once put behind bars.
Looking at the albums that she had driven out in the past few days, Rebecca fell on the sofa in a sad and lost state, staring at the ceiling in a daze,
Rebecca slumped onto the sofa and gazed at the ceiling, taking stock of the albums she had delivered over the past few days. Although she kept her positivity at bay, the world seemed to be conspiring against her. She returned home disheartened as no company dared to seek her credentials.
Was she destined to only be a cleaner in her life? If that was the case, then taking back the custody of her daughter would be impossible for her.
Still not in her defeat, Rebecca sat up from the sofa, her eyes gleaming in determination. Even if it was for warmth, she could not give up. It’s only been three days since Rebecca applied to several companies in New York, but interviews have yet to come her way. Perhaps, her luck was waiting for her in other cities, and it’s worth considering them if things don’t pan out in New York.
Rebecca retrieved the album and meticulously reviewed the designs, refining each one until they were polished. Afterward, she took a shower and covered the dark circles under her eyes by applying concealer.
Once done, Rebecca was clad in a professional dress when she ventured outside, beaming confidently. The firm she scheduled an interview with today is Creative Creations. A well–known graphic design firm specializing in interior, spatial, architecture, and landscape design.
It took her less than five minutes to arrive at the building that almost reached the skyscraper.
In agitation, Rebecca stood below Creative Creations, cheering for herself.
“You failed thrice, but you can ace it!” Rebecca mumbled to herself before she proceeded inside the building.
Creative Creations‘ interview process was the same as that of other companies. The sight of the other applicants waiting anxiously only added to her
unease.
Soon it was Rebecca’s turn. As soon as she stepped into the interview room at Creative Creations, her nerves went into overdrive. She took a deep breath to calm her fidgets.
After glancing around, Rebecca found three interviewers sitting in the empty office. She then shifted her gaze to the middle, where a handsome man in a white shirt and black trousers noticed her.
The man’s sleeves were slightly bent, and his collar was open with two buttons. Despite the hint of boredom in his eyes, he carried himself with such professionalism that it was apparent he was the head of Creative Creations.
“Ms. Rebecca Gadot?” The interviewer on the right asked.
Rebecca quickly retracted her gaze, nodded, and responded, “Yes, that’s me.”
“Please take a seat.” The interviewer on the left remarked.
“Thank you,” Rebecca muttered as she sat down gracefully.
The interview began with the interviewers on both sides posing questions, to which Rebecca responded with vigilance. When their eyes flickered with satisfaction at her response, the man in the middle kept his head down on her resume and slowly raised his head.
“Could you provide us with a sample of your designs?” The man in the middle asked sternly.
“Yes, I have it here,” Rebecca uttered politely, praying her voice would not quaver.
Rebecca stood up and walked over to the man, handing him the album with both hands. The man accepted it and carefully scrutinized the album, paying close attention to every detail.
“You drew all of these?” He asked, looking at Rebecca as though there was a hidden appreciation for her in his eyes.
“Yes, I drew it, Sir,” Rebecca responded with a matter of fact.
Upon hearing this, the corner of the man’s mouth rose slightly, and he complimented, “Your painting is magnificent. It’s impeccably good work. I’ll give

you full marks for that.”
Weighed down by stress of life’s challenges, Rebecca unawares received a compliment. The kind words brought her happiness and gratitude foul the person who had spoken them.
“I’m so glad to hear that, Sir. Your kind words mean a lot to me,” Rebecca replied with genuine delight.
With that, the gentleman rose from his seat and reached out his hand. “Welcome to Creative Creations,” he welcomed.
Rebecca’s eyes widened in disbelief as if she thought it was all a dream. Did she finally receive the acceptance she had been waiting for?
Seeing Rebecca awestruck, the interviewer on the right chortled and quickly reminded, “Ms. Gadot, Mr. Smith is talking to you.”
Tinged with shame, Rebecca jolted as she regained her senses. Abruptly, when she was about to speak, the door to the office creaked open, and a mate colleague strode in with a hostile expression.
The man around the table stopped beside Mr. Smith. He then leaned forward and whispered in Mr. Smith’s ear.
Under her gaze, Rebecca saw how Mr. Smith frowned as he peered in her direction. Her heart thumped, and she suddenly had an ominous feeling
about it.
Jittery, Rebecca pursed her lips and avoided his gaze. She had probably guessed what the staff member told Mr. Smith. It was nothing but the fact that she had been in prison and would tarnish the Company’s prominence.
Just as Rebecca waited for the final sentence, Mr. Smith returned the album and reached out to her again. “Ms. Gadot, are you willing to join Creative Creations?” Klaus asked, disregarding what he had heard just now.
“Mr. Smith, She has been in prison. Creative Creations cannot hire her! It would be a hurdle to the Company’s future!” The male assistant interjected.
Klaus Smith’s intolerant glare swept over the assistant, which made him tongue tied and growled, “Are you the one to decide whether I’ll accept her
or not?”
The assistant bowed his head in shame and apologized, “Mr. Smith, I didn’t mean that.”
“Then, you have no room here. This matter shouldn’t be publicized in the Company.” Klaus warned, making everyone shiver on their spot.
Remorsefully, the male assistant walked out of the office, wondering if he’d still have a job after this.
As for Rebecca, her mouth opened, but she chose not to speak. This was her first meeting with a boss like Mr. Smith. The man focused solely on the prospect’s qualities and did not inquire about her past. Although Rebecca had been in prison, he offered her the position making her at a loss.
“Thank you for giving me this opportunity, Mr. Smith!” Rebecca retorted, bowing her head in respect.
“Then, I’m looking forward to your future designs.” Klaus reckoned.
“It’s my honor to come to Creative Creations!” Rebecca blurted.
When motioned to leave, Rebecca felt like she was on cloud nine as she walked out of Creative Creations‘ building. Rebecca finally landed a job aligned with her college major, which happened to be with a highly reputable design firm.
With a leap of luck, Rebecca had been feeling quite stuck and worried lately. However, all her worries dissipated after being hired, and she felt optimistic about her life and career. She walked a long way along the road and did not feel tired.
As Rebecca approached a bakery, she suddenly halted, recollecting that Rebeccaana’s birthday was only a few days away. Her eyes gleamed in misery because she knew that Chris would never allow her to attend Rebeccaana’s birthday party, but she still couldn’t help but want to prepare a birthday present for her daughter.
“Perhaps, I should bake her one as a present.” Rebecca pondered.
At this moment, a young woman clad in a stylish dress walked out of the cake shop, cradling a beautifully adorned box in her arms. She seemed to be. conversing with someone over the phone as she walked.
“I just came out of the cake shop. I’ll go back immediately. Where are you now? What! The mental hospital? You went to see that crazy woman again?” The woman snarled.
Driven by curiosity, Rebecca glanced at the woman and felt she had seen her before but could not remember.
Chapter 95
“That old woman is insane! What secrets do you expect to get out of her mouth? It’s a waste of time.” The woman spat
The woman’s complaint reached Rebecca’s ears again, she didn’t know which two words frayed her temper. However, the angst in her tone made her suddenly remember who this woman was before her. It was the woman whom Rebecca’s father had an illicit affair in his car, and hearing her mentioning those words made Rebecca’s heart almost miss a beat.
“Who would want an insane wife? Amelia’s hair turned white, and her once beautiful face wrinkled as though years added to her age!” The woman
mocked.
Rebecca’s pupils shrank violently as she eavesdropped on this. She clenched her fists as rage flickered in her eyes. Did that woman just insult her mother?
