Chapter 2
remembered last month at school when those girls cornered me in the bathroom stall, dumping ice water on my head and drawing ugly stuff on my face with lipstick.
Freak! Nerd!” Their laughter was vicious. “You’re such a psycho!”
Your sister’s got depression and you’re just straight-up mental! Walking around looking dead all the time!”
When I got home, Mom smelled something and wrinkled her nose.
Ew, what’s that smell? Go shower now. Stella can’t handle strong odors.”
cried in my room for hours.
But when Mom knocked asking what was wrong, I just wiped my eyes and said “Nothing.”
Because I knew if I told my family I was getting bullied, Stella would have a complete meltdown over the family drama.”
Stella cannot handle any stress whatsoever, or it could be life-threatening!”
The doctor’s words hung over our house like some kind of curse.
The darkness was slowly taking over my vision.
heard Dad talk to the phone: “…Yeah, Stella’s having another episode. Okay, we’ll bring her to the hospital ight now.”
Footsteps rushed past me. Nobody stopped to wonder why I was being so quiet.
‘Riley, go get Stella’s meds!” Mom barked without even looking at me.
tried to answer, but my lips wouldn’t move.
‘She’s being dramatic again. Let’s see how long she keeps this act up!” Dad snapped.

My last conscious memory was standing at the art studio door-packing up all my paints and brushes, locking them away in the storage cabinet.
“Why are you quitting?” my art teacher asked, shocked.

Chapter 2
“You’re the most talented student I’ve ever had!”
“The paint fumes give my sister headaches.” I kept my head down, couldn’t bear to see the disappointment
in her eyes.
“The doctor says she needs a completely quiet environment.”
Now, those locked-away dreams were dying, right alongside me.
The ambulance siren got louder and louder.
I heard Mom cry out: “Stella! Hang in there! The paramedics are almost here!”
Footsteps pounded up to the house. The front door slammed open.
Some of the smell of blood got swept away by the breeze.
‘Where’s the patient?” a stranger’s voice called out.
‘Over here! Hurry! My daughter can’t take much more!” Dad shouted back.
God, I just wanted someone to look down.
To notice there was another daughter bleeding out on the floor, waiting to be saved.
The paramedics rushed straight to the couch, carefully lifting my thrashing sister.
Nobody saw me dying in the corner.
‘Brain bleed patients can’t wait…”
That was the last thing I heard before the world went black forever.
