It was Mrs. Bennett’s birthday.
I didn’t bother dressing up.
I slept in and got ready around noon.
Downstairs, Jordan was having lunch like some country club prince.
I sat across from him and dug in, totally ignoring the table etiquette they loved so much.
When I finished, he gestured toward a box next to him.
‘I picked out a dress for you.”
Another safe, dull dress–like something for a senator’s wife in the ‘50s.
I tossed the box aside.
Upstairs, I pulled out my brand–new red strapless dress.
Spun in the mirror once.
Game face on.
ordan’s car was still parked outside.
When he saw me in the red dress, his eyes lit up–then he told me to get in.
We pulled up in front of the Bennett estate.
The moment I stepped out, Olivia approached in a plunging neckline dress and immediately latched onto Jordan’s arm.
Jordan, Mr. Foster was just asking for you.”
The designer dress she had on?
One of my favorite labels.

I’d begged Jordan for it for months.
He told me I wasn’t “elegant” enough to pull it off.
I gave him a look full of sarcasm and stepped back.
Sensing my distance, he awkwardly tried to explain.
“She’s just helping with the party–it’s Mom’s birthday, she needs to look presentable.”
Funny.
Last year, I wore a backless dress to this same party.
Mrs. Bennett called me a disgrace.
Jordan didn’t say a word to defend me.
Now Olivia’s practically wearing lingerie, and it’s “presentable.”
I didn’t bother arguing.
Just walked inside.
The moment I entered the room, people froze.
Some hadn’t seen me in months.
Mrs. Bennett didn’t even try to hide her disdain.
“Chloe, what are you wearing?”
“That’s completely inappropriate!”
Jordan glanced at me, torn.
Same old scene, same old silence from him.
But this time, I didn’t care.
“It’s fine,” I said.

Chapter 7
“Olivia’s the real lady of the house now.”
“As long as she’s dressed right, we’re good.”
Mrs. Bennett clutched her chest like she was about to faint.
She used to mock my background–called me “low class” and “unsuitable” for her precious son.
Banned Jordan from taking me to events.
Wouldn’t even let him mention my name.
She never expected me to talk back.
She stared at me like she didn’t recognize who I’d become.
Olivia quickly jumped in to comfort her, rubbing her back and acting the perfect daughter–in–law.
Mrs. Bennett held Olivia’s hand tightly, beaming.
“Olivia’s everything you’re not.”
“I wish she were truly my daughter–in–law.”
I smiled.
“Well then, let me make your wish come true. Happy birthday.”
She blinked, confused.
I walked up to the stage, grabbed the mic.
And said something that shocked every guest in the room.
