Only My Ashes Could Cure His Insomnia–Too Bad l’in Not That Generous
Chapter 4
Even though I’d been out of the game for years, my skills and experience hadn’t gone anywhere.
I kept submitting art to studios during my free time.
A few game companies got wind I was coming back.
They were practically tripping over themselves to get me onboard.
In the end, I picked a fresh new startup.
New team, new office, new chapter–everything was looking up.
Jordan called a few times, said he wanted to talk.
I ignored every single call.
One evening after work, I drove back to the old house to pick up some things.
From down the block, I could already see Jordan and Olivia standing on the porch.
He looked at me with this weird softness in his eyes–hopeful, even.
“Chloe, how long are you planning to avoid me? I’m almost out of those scent sachets.”
So that’s why he came. For the damn scent pouches.
The man really couldn’t stand his precious sweetheart feeling the slightest bit uncomfortable.
I gave him a sarcastic smile.
“Why don’t you ask Olivia to make them?”
“I’m not your damn maid.”
Jordan tried to keep his tone even.
“Olivia’s just my employee.”

“Can you stop blowing things out of proportion?”
“If you just come back home, I’ll forget this whole runaway thing ever happened.”
“I’ll forgive you.”
I had to fight the urge to touch his forehead to check if he had a fever.
“I don’t need your forgiveness, Jordan.”
“I just want a divorce.”
He rubbed his temples, clearly irritated.
“You used to never get this worked up over something so minor.”
I stared at him, my smile sharp and cold.
“Jordan, do you even remember what you said to me back when we moved into this house?”
He paused, brows furrowed, clearly digging through old memories.
“To love you forever.”
“Chloe, be honest–have I ever treated you badly all these years?”
I laughed.
No, he didn’t treat me badly.
He just gave everything that should’ve been mine–his care, his love–to someone else.
His gaze darkened, lips tight, face tense.
I knew that look.
His insomnia was acting up again.
But I didn’t move an inch.
Olivia mumbled under her breath.

“So what if she can make a couple dumb herbal bags?”
“It’s not like she’s special.”
She wasn’t loud, but I heard it loud and clear.
Jordan’s stare turned ice cold.
“Shut up.”
Tears welled up in Olivia’s eyes.
He yanked his hand out of hers and looked back at me with that gentle expression I used to love.
“Chloe, mind if I sit under the old oak tree for a while?”
“I just… need to breathe.”
I gave him a knowing smile.
“Be my guest.”
He stepped into the yard.
He saw the sunflowers we planted together, still blooming quietly in the corner.
He saw the swing by the wall, faded and swaying gently in the breeze.
He saw the messy spray paint mural we made the night our game launched.
A tiny smile pulled at the edge of his lips.
He was at peace.
Finally, he saw it.
In a yard full of life and color, he saw it-
That dead, dried–up oak tree.
Just like our marriage.
