5 Chapter 5
I didn’t spare him another glance as I walked out the door.
“Wait!” Madison shrieked, her face turning white as she glanced at the agreement.
I smiled. “Don’t worry. That will absolutely never happen.”
“Ryan, get to the funeral home! Your parents are gone! My brother… my brother is dead!” Thomas sobbed, struggling to breathe.
Just then, his phone rang. It was Thomas.
I laughed coldly. “You have a short memory. I tried to tell you last night, but you blocked my number and muted all my notifications.”
Ryan’s expression was cold, mocking. “Seriously?”
I turned to leave, but Ryan’s voice, now trembling, stopped me. “If… if my parents are really gone, why didn’t you tell me last night?”
“Ryan, I don’t think your parents are going to make it. They want to see you.”
“Ryan, look at the asset division clause! This bitch is trying to take all of your parents‘ property and stocks! I won’t allow it!”
“Ryan, your parents are seriously injured.”
With a trembling hand, he dialed Jake’s number.
He crumpled to the floor, muttering, “This can’t be happening…”
Ryan’s eyes were bloodshot as he glared at me. “Do you have proof?”
Ryan didn’t answer. His face was ashen, and a snake of unease coiled in his gut.
I pulled out a second agreement, one where I walked away with nothing. I placed it on
the table.
Each message was a knife in his heart.
Ryan fumbled for his phone, scrolling through the alerts he had silenced.
The messages stopped there. Ryan’s hands began to shake.

Madison rushed to help him up, but Ryan shoved her away, “Get off me.”
“Where are you, Ryan?”
But Jake’s frantic voice sent him crashing into an icy abyss. “Ryan, I finally got through! Get to the funeral home, now! Uncle Thomas is here alone, and his heart’s not good. I’m worried he’s not going to make it…”
I slapped the divorce papers down on the table in front of Ryan. “I’m tired,” I said softly. “Let’s get a divorce.”
Ryan signed his name with a flourish, the black ink a stark slash against the white paper.
“Ryan, Central Hospital ER, come now!”
I didn’t.
A ghastly smile twisted his lips. “I see. It’s all a lie. I’m calling Jake right now. He’ll put an end to this.”
Ryan snatched the document and stared at me in shock. “Lidia, I never knew you were this greedy. They’re my parents. Why would they leave their assets to you?”
“The message has been delivered,” I said. “Believe it or not.”
“I’ll do just fine without your parents‘ money. Do you believe they wanted to provide for me? Sign the first one. Or do you think they died hating me? Sign the second. Either way, I don’t owe this family a damn thing”
“Come to the funeral home.”
Madison shot up from the bed, grabbing Ryan’s arm nervously. “Ryan, your uncle is a great actor. I wonder what Lidia offered him to lie for her…”
I sighed. “Believe it or not, it was their dying wish.”
Ryan stood frozen, unable to sign.
“Yes,” I replied.
He picked up a pen, his tone dripping with contempt. “Of course. It would be my pleasure. Just don’t come crawling back, begging me to get in your bed again, Lidia. The thought of you makes my skin crawl.”

He answered hesitantly. A heart–wrenching wail echoed from the phone, filling the
room.
Ryan slammed the phone down.
