Chapter 133
She shut down the monitor fast, the heartbeat flickering away into static before the tape ran out.
ould get going,” she muttered, wiping down the wand and quickly packing up her things.
“Let me walk you out,” I said, standing up fast, heart pounding
I didn’t want her to explode in front of Derek.

As soon as we stepped onto the porch, Amy rounded on me
“That was way too close,” she hissed, keeping her voice low. “You didn’t tell me he was going to lose his mind.”
I put my hands up. “I didn’t know! He’s been cold for days I didn’t think he’d get so intense!”
Amy shoved her hands into her coat pockets, eyes wild. “You told me this was a one–time thing. A little video. Something to make him feel better.”
“I had to do something,” I snapped. “He was slipping away
Amy stared at me for a long moment. Then shook her head slowly. “Your lies get people hurt, Cass.”
flinched. “It’s not like that.”
“It’s exactly like that,” she said, voice low, “And I don’t want any part of it.”
She started walking toward her car.
“Amy–come on, please, I need you-”
She stopped. “No. You need to stop. Before you wreck yourself. And him. And everyone around you.”
Then she got in the car and drove off, tires crunching over gravel, leaving me frozen on the porch.
When I walked back inside, I heard Derek’s voice before I saw him.
“I don’t care what it costs,” he was saying into the phone. “Order the sonogram machine. Get it here by tomorrow. I want it set up in the east guest room.”
1 froze in the doorway.
He was standing by the window, phone in one hand, the other pressed to the back of his neck like he was still overwhelmed.
Joe said something, on the other end. Derek exhaled. “Yes. For Cassandra. For the baby,”
For the baby that doesn’t exist.
I forced a smile as he turned toward me. “You’re really doing this?”
He nodded. “Yeah. It’s time I started acting like a father. Whatever this thing between us is, we‘ in it now.”
I nodded too, pretending to agree..
But my heart was pounding harder than ever.
I had maybe twenty–four hours to come up with my next miracle.
Chapter 133
Because if a real machine showed up–and I had nothing to show for it?
It would all come crashing down.
And this time, there would be no Amy, no video, no easy fix.
Only the truth.
And I wasn’t ready for that.
