Lucy gently caressed my urn. A warm tear splashed onto the surface.
Inside, I was a mess of emotions.
“Eva, when we were kids, you saved me from that nightmare attic. Now, it’s my turn to save you. From now on, can you visit me more in my dreams?
“Without you, life is so lonely. I wish it was me who died. You were so talented and kind. You should’ve had a happy life…”
More and more tears fell onto the urn.
Lucy crouched down like a child who had lost her home, taken in, treated like family, only to be discarded again.
She stood at a crossroads, unsure of where to turn.
I stood beside her, gently stroking her hair.
“I’m sorry, Lucy. In the end, I lost. I was fooled by false love and let you down.”
“Sweetheart! Be a good girl! Please give Eva back to Auntie! I’m begging you!”
Behind us, my parents and David came running, gasping for breath.
