Chapter 94

My eyes shook like a magnitude-ten earthquake had hit.

Cassie, you absolute maniac!

But what threw me even more was Alpha Gideon, sitting there, arms crossed, leaning back, brow furrowed

like he was mulling over a major deal.

After a long pause, he said, “Hmm, not a bad idea.”

My brain screamed: What are you “hmm”-ing about?!

Cassie, who’d blurted it out in a reckless moment, saw me on the verge of passing out and realized she’d just

unleashed Pandora’s box.

“Haha, yeah, right?” she said, forcing a laugh, desperate to change the subject.

But once that box was open, good luck closing it.

Alpha Gideon added, “It could work, but she’s too skittish. Probably wouldn’t dare.”

His gaze flicked to me, light and teasing.

I, who’d bragged about my courage before, had no choice but to play dead.

The vibe turned weird.

Cassie’s eyes darted between us three times.

Leaning slightly toward Alpha Gideon, she ventured cautiously,

“So, it’s just about being bold?”

Alpha Gideon didn’t answer, just gave her a cool, unreadable look.

“I’m pretty bold,” Cassie said, scooting closer, showing off the beaded bracelet on her wrist.

“Fun fact: I’m a lawyer by day, ghost hunter by night! I was a sickly pup, and some fortune-teller said I

wouldn’t live past nineteen. My grandma, a legendary shaman in our pack, taught me all her tricks to keep me

alive.”

Alpha Gideon let out a dry chuckle and stood to leave.

Cassie shot me a look: Let’s bolt.

I jumped up.

We took a few steps, remembered the wontons, and doubled back to grab them.

Outside, we said bye to Frank and hightailed it, not slowing down.

Downstairs, I “pummeled” Cassie first.

Cassie begged for mercy.

“I got carried away! Who knew he’d actually play along? Come on, think about it-be bold!”

I scoffed. “Bold? I’d need to hunt a ghost to grow that kind of nerve.”

Thinking of how Cassie’s nonsense had left Alpha Gideon speechless upstairs, I snorted. “So, ghost hunter,

teach me how to catch one.”

Cassie slipped off her bracelet and solemnly placed it on my wrist. “You’re my top disciple now. Call me

Master.”

I rolled my eyes. What’s it like having a bestie who’s equal parts badass and unhinged?

Ignoring her, I unpacked, tossed my clothes in the washer, showered, and dove into my soft, fragrant bed.

I flopped face-down, eyes closed.

Cassie, crashing for the night, scrolled on her phone nearby.

Seeing me buried in my pillow, she leaned in and whispered,

“Vivian, Alpha Adrian and Vanessa forming a sacred bond-doesn’t that mess with you at all? Not even a little

bad vibe?”

Even after breaking the bond, could anyone really feel nothing, like a robot?

I, eyes still shut, mumbled lazily,

“Oh, I feel something. It’s gross, bad luck. Good thing you didn’t tell me before the wontons, or I’d have ruined

that meal.”

Cassie grinned, relieved.

Those two jerks binding would stir up trouble, and she didn’t want me hurting.

“Real talk, Alpha Gideon’s a snack. Why not take a bite?”

My face warmed, my mind flashing to things.

“You sure it’s me eating him and not him eating me? Ever seen an antelope take down a lion on the savanna?”

Cassie was hyping me up way too much.

“Who cares who’s eating who?” Cassie said.

“When the spark hits, it’s all you-in-me, me-in-you. Why split hairs over who’s the water and who’s the milk?”

I cracked one eye open.

“Cassie, get a mate first. Stop acting like a seasoned pro when you’ve been single since the womb.”

Cassie opened her mouth, then deflated.

Morning came.

I dragged myself out of bed at nine.

Three hours of sleep, up at nine, at the office by nine.

Brewing coffee in the break room felt like brewing a lifeline.

When I got back to my desk with a cup bitterer than my mood, Alpha Gideon was already there.

His office door was open-Elliot was in.

Honestly, Elliot had it worse; she didn’t have to be on call 24/7.

That thought lightened my step.

Two minutes after sitting, Elliot popped in.

“Vivian, those dark circles and puffy face-you had a rough couple of days, huh?”

“Don’t get me started,” I said, my expression saying it all.

I almost spilled about William’s antics but stopped.

Mentioning the drugging would drag me into it, and skipping that part wouldn’t capture how vile he was.

Better to keep quiet.

The Hartley pack would handle William anyway.

How? Not my problem.

Elliot sat, chatting work, then asked tentatively,

“Alpha Gideon didn’t give you a hard time, did he?”

“Nah,” I smiled. “Why? He rough you up on trips?”

“Not really. He’s solid most of the time.”

“True that.”

Just a tiny bit tricky sometimes.

We shared a knowing grin, bonding over some unspoken vibe.

After the morning meeting, I got a call from Erin, an old colleague, inviting me to lunch.

Glancing at Alpha Gideon ahead, I noted he had no lunch plans, and Elliot was around.

“Sure, which place?”

“The Lunch Box.”

“Cool, I’ll be there around noon.”

“Great,” Erin replied, her voice tinged with unease.

After hanging up, Erin glanced at Alpha Adrian standing nearby, thinking, Sorry, Vivian, I didn’t have a choice.

I pocketed my phone.

Alpha Gideon looked back, his gaze deep but blank.

I wondered: What’s that look for?

Was he judging me for grabbing lunch with an old coworker?

In the elevator, joined by some execs, they made polite small talk with Alpha Gideon.

Their glances at me carried heavy implications-I knew a new rumor was brewing.

At their floor, Alpha Gideon slowed his pace.

Elliot and I matched him.

He turned, his eyes openly annoyed.

“You’re not with Helixon Enterprises anymore. You’ve got a new boss.”

“They’re just used to calling me that,” I said, exasperated.

He was that bothered by it?

Talk about micromanaging!
