Chapter 90

My ear was pressed to the door when it swung open.

I stumbled forward, nearly crashing into Alpha Gideon’s chest, but grabbed the doorframe with lightning

reflexes, yanking myself back with all my might.

“Morning,” I gasped, steadying myself.

I brushed stray hair from my face, forcing an awkward but poised smile.

Alpha Gideon studied me silently for a moment.

“What’re you sneaking around for this early?”

His tone was so casual, you’d think I was the one who’d gone feral twice last night.

There he stood, decked out in a tailored, vintage dark brown suit, tall and refined, not a trace of the previous night’s chaos.

I mentally rolled my eyes.

He was clear-headed now, conveniently forgetting to mention his antics while calling me sneaky.

“Came to wake you up. We’re leaving this afternoon, so I figured we’d pack,” I said, cobbling together an

excuse.

Alpha Gideon paused for a few seconds. “Let’s grab breakfast first.”

Breakfast? No way am I eating with you!

The awkwardness would kill me.

“You go ahead. I like to get work done first,” I said, stepping back.

Alpha Gideon walked out, took a few steps, then glanced back, his eyes narrowing.

“Vivian, you’re the one insisting on going in there. Don’t regret it.”

Without explaining, he turned and left.

I blinked, confused.

Regret?

What, did he hide someone in there? A she-wolf? A wolf?

The puzzle clicked when I stepped into the bathroom, catching a lingering scent that hadn’t fully faded.

I did regret it.

I knew way too much now.

I packed his luggage, then dragged my feet packing my own, stalling before heading downstairs, hoping he’d

finished breakfast.

Downstairs, I found him lounging on the living room sofa.

“You remodel the whole upstairs or what?”

Alpha Gideon said, his cool gaze lifting.

“Come on, let’s eat.”

My brain felt like it took a bullet.

Why was he waiting for me?

I wanted no part of this!

“Don’t just stand there,” he said, standing.

When I didn’t move, he prodded again.

I slapped my cheeks as I walked, muttering to myself to stay cool.

Sure, last night was wild, and now I knew things…

But sitting down, seeing him all pristine and aloof in the morning light, my mind betrayed me.

It flashed to his black robe half-open, dripping with desire, and-oh no-l imagined him alone in the bathroom, handling things himself…

God help me.

I squeezed my eyes shut, half-crazed.

I swore it wasn’t on purpose.

I was a grown she-wolf-those images just hijacked my brain.

“Told you you’d regret it,” Alpha Gideon sighed.

I clenched my fists. How is he so damn calm?

He looked at me, all concern.

“You look rattled. Did I scare you?”

“No worries!” I blurted, throwing up a stop sign with my hand, my face fierce. “I’m tough as nails.”

I dug into breakfast, slicing my plate, chewing air, thinking about global crises, starving pups, world peace- anything to flip the page on this mess.

But Alpha Gideon yanked it back, his voice soft. “I’m sorry for kissing you without your okay.”

I choked on nothing, coughing like I’d inhaled a lungful of dust.

Why bring it up now?

He slid a glass of water over.

I gulped half of it, gasping, “Let’s pretend it never happened.”

“I need to own up to it,” he said.

I waved my hands frantically, horrified. “No, no, no need!”

My triple denial came with a look like I’d seen a ghost.

Alpha Gideon’s eyes dimmed, like falling stars, before he chuckled softly. “Big tough she-wolf, huh?

Scaredy-cat.”

I clutched my glass, silent.

The air thickened, a slight, uneasy pause settling in.

I stared at the crystal glass, sparkling and fragile, like a beautiful lie.

Alpha Gideon stood and left.

I set the glass down, exhaling slowly.

Maybe it was the mountain’s weird vibes or the drug-fueled kiss last night, giving him a fleeting illusion about me. Back in the real world, he’d snap out of it.

Yeah, back to normal.

Outside, Owen was already there, updating Alpha Gideon.

“William bolted before dawn. Said he ate something bad-acute stomach bug. His crew left with him.”

Alpha Gideon nodded, saying nothing.

I thought: Even the sky knows to run.

Chloe must’ve delivered the message.

With William gone, the resort inspection-meant for both him and Alpha Gideon-fell to Alpha Gideon alone.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., he handled the ceremony, lunch, and a tour of the resort with a crowd in tow.

I stayed by his side.

By 4:30, we were ready to head back.

On the way there, Alpha Gideon had me sit in the back with him. I hadn’t thought much of it-mountain roads were safer in the back.

But now? No way I was sitting next to him.

I opened the car door. Alpha Gideon slid in, scooting over.

The invitation was obvious.

Bang.

I slammed the door shut, hopped into the front passenger seat, and buckled up.

Alpha Gideon froze.

The driver thought: Whoa, Vivian’s up front? Trouble with Alpha Gideon?

“Let’s roll,” I said to the driver.

He started the car in silence.

The ride was quiet-too quiet, like the calm before a storm or the aftermath of an apocalypse. The tension

was suffocating.

I stayed awake, sitting ramrod straight.

The driver cracked a window for air.

As we left the mountains, dusk fell, the distant pack lights of the pack flickering into view.

Alpha Gideon took a call, then told the driver, “Skip the airport.”

He gave an address for a private club.

I tilted my head slightly.

From the call, it sounded like a close friend.

But would we make it back to Cloud Pack tonight?

“Vivian, if you want to head back to Cloud Pack first, you can,” Alpha Gideon said from the back, his voice low

and flat.
