Chapter 86
Chloe’s eyes widened, as big as grapes, filled with disbelief.
William’s jowls twitched.
Wasn’t this pup supposed to be a gentleman?
Shouldn’t he be shielding the poor she-wolf, letting her sit beside him or at least grabbing her a chair?

Squat? Like some mutt?
The room froze, like a play where one actor veered off-script, leaving everyone else stumbling.
I thought: That’s my boss-pure venom!
For a second, I’d worried he was actually into the she-wolf.
If he’d fallen for Chloe, all I could do as his assistant was mourn his lack of willpower, caught in William’s
trap, and let him run wild.

Chloe stood there, wobbling like she might collapse.
“Margot, get Chloe a chair,” William barked, his face sour.
Margot scurried off, returning with a chair and placing it in the small gap between Alpha Gideon and William.
Like a caring big sister, she guided the trembling she-wolf to sit.
Chloe sat, legs pressed together, hands folded primly, worlds apart from the sultry, flirty, or spicy vibes of the
other nine she-wolves.
Maybe that’s just how wolves saw her.
The group went back to drinking and chatting.
Alpha Gideon acted like Chloe didn’t exist.
William was antsy.
If he straight-up suggested Alpha Gideon take Chloe back to his villa, this sly pup would shut it down.
But he was sure Alpha Gideon had his eye on her-why else would he notice her by the pool?
“William,” Alpha Gideon said, mimicking his glass-swirling with a playful edge, “what’s Chloe’s deal?”
William slapped his thigh, thrilled. “Chloe’s got a sad story. She’s the daughter of one of my wolves-real sweet. Lost her dad in a car crash a few years back. Mom’s sick, brother’s a deadbeat. She’s just a freshman, juggling school, caring for her mom, and scraping together tuition. Then her mom’s condition tanked- surgery’s gonna cost two hundred grand, so…”
He sighed, feigning pity.
Chloe’s face flushed, her chin practically buried in her chest.
Alpha Gideon stayed silent.
I thought: This plot…
I glanced at Margot, betting she’d cooked up this sob story for William.
Dead dad, sick mom, useless brother, broke college she-wolf, and a sudden crisis needing a fortune for surgery. Brave, pure Chloe forced to sell her innocence to save her family.
It was a superpower-stack those tropes, and whether it’s Alpha Adrian or Alpha Gideon, a young officer or a
mob boss, they’d all melt into idiots.
Except maybe Alpha Gideon.
Everyone leaned in, ears perked for his reaction.
“I was thinking…” Alpha Gideon started, his brow furrowed. William’s eyes lit up, expecting him to swoop in
and “save” the damsel. All that posturing, and you’re just another wolf with the same urges.
“…this bottle of Romanée-Conti’s worth a million, right?”

William blinked. “Huh?” Back to the wine?
Alpha Gideon set his glass down, looking guilty.
“One bottle could’ve saved her family a few times over.”
William’s face turned to stone.
Alpha Gideon added, all concern,
“Need an exorcist, William? I’m worried Chloe’s dad might show up tonight to choke you out.”
William nearly coughed up blood.
I ran through every sad memory I had to keep from laughing.
Alpha Gideon didn’t just roast others-he roasted himself, too, while fretting over the old wolf’s safety. What a
guy.
I wasn’t the only one struggling. The others on the sofas were fighting internal injuries to hold it together.
Chloe’s head stayed down, too mortified to look up.
William finally got it.
This pup was toying with them.
Fine. If he wouldn’t play nice, William would play dirty.
“Alpha Gideon, you’ve got a sharp tongue,” William said, chuckling to defuse the tension.
“I never said I wouldn’t help Chloe. I offered, but she’s stubborn-doesn’t want to owe anyone. Still, you’re
right. I feel bad. Tomorrow, I’ll cover her mom’s medical bills.”
Alpha Gideon nodded.
“My bad, William. I misjudged you. Figured you wouldn’t push a young she-wolf into something like this. I’ll
drink to that.”
He picked up his glass, taking a sip.
William smirked.
“One sip? That’s your penalty? Not very bold, Alpha Gideon.”
“Chugging would be a crime against this wine,” Alpha Gideon shot back.
William laughed.
“It’s just a bottle. You dodging the drink?”
Alpha Gideon’s face turned serious.
“Sure, just a bottle. But this half-glass is worth ten grand. A toast with you, that’s twenty. I’m scared Chloe’s dad will haunt our beds tonight. You’re not?”

William rubbed his throbbing temples, done arguing with this pup.
Someone needs to sew his mouth shut.
I almost felt bad for William. Why poke the bear?
William deflated, and the others didn’t dare challenge Alpha Gideon either.
He was terrifying.

Like a wolf perched on a cliff, seeing through everyone’s games but playing along, toying with them like a cat with mice-until the mice realized they’d been had.
“It’s 8:30. I’m heading back to rest,” Alpha Gideon said, standing.
William stood too, the others following suit.
“8:30 and you’re turning in?” William asked.
“Gotta stay healthy,” Alpha Gideon said with a friendly smile, then added,
“You should try fixing the barn before the sheep’s gone, William.”
Fix your ghost!
William swallowed his rage.
“Alpha Gideon, I’m practically your elder. I held you when you were a pup. Show some respect, or you’ll break my heart.”
Alpha Gideon’s smile was cryptic. “How should I show respect, William?”
William steadied himself. “It’s rare we get this chance. Skip the drinks, let’s grab some late-night food.”
Without waiting for Alpha Gideon’s answer, he waved everyone toward the dining room, shooting a subtle glance at one of his wolves.
