Chapter 84

I nodded.

“Got it.”

I wondered if I should warn Alpha Gideon that William was up to no good, trying to drag him into a den of

debauchery.

But then I thought better of it.

With Alpha Gideon’s smarts, did he really need me pointing out the obvious?

I texted Owen, passing along Alpha Gideon’s message.

“There’s still time. Let’s take a walk,” Alpha Gideon said.

I finished sending the text and looked up.

“Pass. It’s getting dark, and wandering alone in these mountains is creepy. I’ll stay in the villa.”

I caught the odd look on Alpha Gideon’s face and backtracked.

“Wait, you mean you want to go for a walk?”

“Wandering alone is kinda creepy,” he said, his expression almost wistful.

“I’ll come with,” I said, my smile sharp like I’d bitten into raw ginger.

Why couldn’t he just say, I’m going for a walk, come with?

Talking to him was like tackling a reading comprehension test-full of confidence, only to get marked wrong.

It made me feel like a total goof.

Alpha Gideon eyed my blazer and heels.

“Change into something comfortable. Swap the shoes.”

I complied, heading to my guest room to throw on loose clothes and flats.

We stepped out just after five.

The sun hadn’t fully set, painting the distant peaks in golden light.

The air was crisp, the breeze cool, and the sinking sun was a jaw-dropping sight.

I trailed behind Alpha Gideon.

I’d braced for a brisk pace-his long legs could outstride me in a heartbeat-but he walked slowly, giving me time to soak in the scenery.

“Ever heard a legend?”

Alpha Gideon asked, his tone casual.

I perked up. “What legend?”

“They say dusk is a supernatural hour, the ‘witching time.’ Creatures lurking in the shadows come out, taking wolf form or possessing someone. They’ll call your name, and if you answer, they devour your soul.”

I went quiet for three seconds, then played along with an exaggerated gasp.

“That’s terrifying!”

“No need to worry. Just a story. Thought it was interesting.”

“It is. But can they only call your name? What about other stuff, like a pup calling for their mom? If she answers, does that count?”

Alpha Gideon gave a faint smile.

“Sure it counts. Spirits don’t just possess-they can mimic someone you know, luring you in to snatch your soul when you’re not looking.”

I let out a dramatic, “Stop, stop, that’s too much!

Alpha Gideon dropped it.

We kept walking, reaching a pavilion.

The sunset had deepened, reds and oranges blending in a breathtaking display, so vivid it stole my breath.

Lost in the view, I barely registered Alpha Gideon’s voice, soft and unnervingly tender. “Vivian.”

Alpha Gideon waved a hand.

“Vivian? You okay?”

I kept my head down, silent.

“Vivian?”

“Hey, I’m talking to you. Cat got your tongue?”

He cupped my face in his hands, his tone coaxing.

“What’s up? Oh, the legend? You’re not taking it seriously, are you? Come on, talk.”

I stayed resolute, eyes squeezed shut.

No way was I falling for it.

Sure, it was a game, but I wasn’t losing.

It was like a game of freeze tag-pure endurance.

What I didn’t know was that while I was locked in, Alpha Gideon’s mind wandered.

His gaze lingered on my lips, rosy and tempting under the fiery sunset, completely unguarded.

The pavilion grew still, only the wind whispering.

Alpha Gideon leaned closer, inch by inch.

My eyes flicked, my pulse racing with an odd panic.

A warm breath grazed my cheek, my nose, then hovered at my lips.

His voice, husky and teasing, carried on the breeze.

“Even if you don’t answer, I could still eat you up-swallow you whole, bones and all,”

Changing the rules?

I wasn’t having it.

I opened my eyes, meeting his striking face, dangerously close, glowing with a demonic charm in the red light, like he was possessed.

1 froze, caught in some strange pull, my heart and breath a chaotic mess.

Our lips were so close, a slight tit would’ve closed the gap.

After what felt like forever, Alpha Gideon sighed, almost disappointed, and straightened, letting go of my face. “Man, you’re tough to trick.

He turned, gazing at the fading sunset.

Who says the witching hour’s just a legend?

My legs wobbled as I sank onto a bench, touching my sun-warmed face, my heart still pounding.

This guy’s competitive streak was unreal!

He’d pull any trick to win.

The last sliver of light vanished, swallowed by darkness. T

he air turned colder.

Alpha Gideon turned back. “Come on, time to face the real monsters.”

I stood, thinking I’d already been spooked enough. Is this a workplace injury?

We returned to our villa.

At 6:40, we headed to William’s place.

I rang the bell.

A moment later, the door opened.

It was William’s assistant, Margot Lane, who we’d met at the last dinner.

Every move she made dripped with allure.

“Alpha Gideon, come on in,” she purred.

Alpha Gideon didn’t spare her a glance, striding inside.

I gave Margot a polite smile, and we followed her in, Margot leading the way.

She took us to the heart of the villa, a massive hall that could hold dozens, opening to a shadowy bamboo grove and a heated pool outside.

The air hit us like a wall-thick with smoke, booze, perfume, and a chaotic mix of other scents.

Alpha Gideon’s brow twitched.

“My Alpha Gideon! You’re finally here. I’ve been dying waiting for you,” William called, rising from a sofa with over-the-top flair, striding toward us.

He reached out, aiming to clap Alpha Gideon on the shoulder, but Alpha Gideon sidestepped, leaving

William’s hand hanging.

William’s face flickered with embarrassment.

Alpha Gideon, clearly aiming to twist the knife, smirked.

“William, you’re in high spirits, huh? Brought a whole pack to party. Must be exhausting-heard you could barely get out of bed. Take care of yourself.”

William’s expression was a kaleidoscope of colors.

Smug pup. Don’t act all high and mighty.

You’ll show your true colors soon enough.

His eyes slid to me behind Alpha Gideon, his smile turning sly.

“Vivian, Alpha Gideon’s not under the weather, is he? Can he handle a drink?”

I flashed a practiced smile.

“William, you’re joking. Whether he drinks is up to him.”

William grinned. “Oh, I’m getting him plastered tonight.”

He waved a hand.

“Let’s sit. I’ll introduce you to some friends.”

His so-called “high-society wolves” stood the moment Alpha Gideon entered, their faces eager to please.

The she-wolves in the room-knowing a young, handsome, and powerful wolf had arrived-rose in twos and

threes.

A few in swimsuits by the glass-walled pool outside peeked in curiously.
