Chapter83
My mind drifted to the past. I’d once poured my heart into being a mate, too. No matter how grueling work was, I’d cook that jerk’s favorite meals.
The fridge and pantry were always stocked with his preferred drinks.
Every suit, every shirt in his closet was meticulously ironed, ties carefully paired so he could grab an outfit and look effortlessly sharp-only for him to strut off and charm some vixen.
Ugh. Love really makes wolves stupid.
Stupid before the heartache, and stupid after.
Was the pain inevitable? Shouldn’t you just toss it out when it’s handed to you? Better to reject a thousand
than trust one.
“Vivian, you got a grudge against my clothes or what?”
Alpha Gideon’s cool voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I realized I’d been lost in my head, my hands crumpling his shirt as my thoughts spiraled.
When had he even walked in? His eyes were too damn sharp.
“Sorry, I’ll iron it,” I said, releasing the shirt and smoothing it out.
“Thinking about something that pissed you off?” Alpha Gideon asked, shrugging off his jacket and handing it
to me, his tone casual, like we were just chatting.
“Nothing,” I said, taking the jacket. I draped the shirt over my arm, grabbed a hanger, and hung the jacket in
the closet, clearly not in the mood to talk.
I wasn’t one to vent, not even to Cassie.
Noticing Alpha Gideon still lingering, I turned, my brain and tongue somehow misfiring. “Alpha Gideon, you got anything else to take off?”
Alpha Gideon blinked.
My face went pale.
The air stilled.
Oh no. Oh, hell! What had I just said?
Take off?
Alpha Gideon, anything else to take off?
He was down to a dress shirt and slacks!
I wanted to knock myself out. I’d meant to ask if he had anything else to say, but my brain had snagged on
him shedding his jacket, and the words got all tangled up.

As my panic spiked, Alpha Gideon spoke, dead serious. “Nah, I’m good. Strip any further, and I’ll catch a cold.”
He shot me a complicated look, then walked out.
I was speechless. What was that look?
What was he thinking? My assistant’s got a filthy mind, wanting me to strip naked, and I just can’t oblige?
I gripped the closet door, ready to die of embarrassment.

Moving at lightning speed, I hung up the rest of his clothes, ironed the wrinkled shirt, and bolted from the dressing room, avoiding eye contact with everything.
Back in my guest room, I took a moment to calm down before unpacking my own stuff.
About an hour later, Owen texted: Vivian, William’s up. He says it’s too late for the tour today, so we’ll do it
tomorrow. Also, he’s inviting Alpha Gideon to his place for drinks tonight.
I smirked. So that’s why William brought ten she-wolves.
I replied: Got it, I’ll pass it along.

I headed to the master bedroom, knocking twice.
No answer.
Napping?
Maybe. But what if he was showering? Changing? Video-calling some hot young wolf?
Tricky.
Since the tour was canceled, there was no rush to relay the message. I left.

Another hour later, Owen texted again: William’s asking if Alpha Gideon’s coming tonight. Says if Alpha
Gideon doesn’t want to go to him, he’ll bring his crew over.
That old fox, I thought, chuckling. I replied: Alpha Gideon’s resting. I don’t know his call yet. Tell William to
chill-I’ll check with Alpha Gideon.
Owen sent a crying emoji.
Big shots talking through intermediaries always put the messenger in the crosshairs. One wrong move, and
you’re toast.
I got his pain, sending back a comforting smiley.
I pocketed my phone and knocked on Alpha Gideon’s door again. This time, a voice answered, “Come in.”
I pushed the door open. Alpha Gideon stood by the window, his back to me, gazing at the scenery. The bed was untouched, and he’d swapped his suit for beige casuals.
So, no nap? He’d been changing?
“What’s up?” he asked, turning around.
“William sent word twice. First, an hour ago-he said it’s too late for the tour, so it’s set for tomorrow. He’s inviting you for drinks at his place tonight. Second, just now-he said if you don’t go to him, he’ll come here with his crew.” I relayed it straight.
I added, “I knocked earlier, but you didn’t answer, so I figured I’d let him stew.”
Alpha Gideon gave a faint, unbothered chuckle. “No problem. Let him stew.”
He glanced at his watch. “Tell Owen to let William know I’ll be there at seven sharp.”
