Chapter76
I headed downstairs, my mood lighter.
Alpha Gideon was a handful, no doubt about it, but at least he’d let his guard down enough to clear the air.
No more misunderstandings.
In the middle of the night, half-asleep, I heard my phone ping.
Groggily, I grabbed it.
Alpha Gideon: Vivian, don’t forget to come to work tomorrow.
My eyes barely open in the dark, I typed back: Got it, boss.
I didn’t notice my fingers slip.
Got it, boss became Got it, baby.
I swiped the chat away, tossed the phone aside, and rolled over, sinking back into sweet sleep.
The next morning, 7:30 a.m.
Frank laid out breakfast.
Alpha Gideon had said he was heading to the office today.
Normally, he’d be up at six for a run, eating by seven while scanning financial news, then making calls or hopping on video meetings in the garden, arriving at the office by nine sharp.
But with his injury, he’d been sleeping in.
By nine, he still hadn’t emerged.
Elliot arrived, shocked to hear Alpha Gideon wasn’t up.
“What happened last night? Did Alpha Gideon finally hit a club?”
A lame joke.
Even uninjured, Alpha Gideon’s nightlife was as exciting as a monk’s.
Frank crossed his arms, puzzled. “It’s weird. He never sleeps in.”
Neither dared knock on his door.
At 8:30, Alpha Gideon finally appeared, his pale face showing signs of a rough night, faint shadows under his
eyes.
Elliot and Frank exchanged looks: Did he actually go clubbing?
Alpha Gideon ignored them and headed to the dining room.
They trailed behind like loyal pups.

As he ate, Elliot held off on the day’s schedule, sensing his mood.
Frank quietly served.

Then Alpha Gideon sipped his juice and smiled.
“This juice is good today.”
Elliot and Frank blinked. It’s the same juice as always.
Maybe the fruit’s extra sweet?
Alpha Gideon dug into breakfast, appetite strong.
Elliot hesitated to interrupt with work talk.
Then his phone rang. He glanced at it, muttering, “Vivian calling this early?”
He started to step outside.
“Take it here,” Alpha Gideon said, his voice cool.
“Uh, okay.”
Elliot, confused but obedient, answered. “Vivian.”
Her voice was soft, upbeat. “Elliot, when do you get to the office?”
“Around nine. Why?”
“So, I’m starting today, but I haven’t grabbed my access card f or found my office. Could you swing by and
help me out?”
Elliot chuckled. “You’re not out yet, right? I’m upstairs. Just come up, and you can ride with Alpha Gideon to
the office.”
Silence on the other end.
“I’ll meet you at the office.”
What kind of employee just strolls into the boss’s place and hitches a ride?
The dining room was quiet enough for Alpha Gideon to catch most of her words.
He set his juice down-hard.
“She own you now? Tell her to deal with HR herself!” His sharp tone carried through the phone.
Elliot, flustered, thought, It’s just a favor.
“No problem, no problem! Just send me HR’s contact.”
Elliot sighed. “Alright, I’ll shoot you the HR manager’s WhatsApp.”
“Thanks. See you at the office,”I said brightly, hanging up.

First day on the job, and I’d already been caught trying to pull strings, getting Elliot chewed out too.
Buzz, buzz.
Elliot’s message came through.
I’d been too busy with breakfast and makeup to check WhatsApp all morning.
When I opened Elliot’s message, another one just below it caught my eye.
Everyone had quirky WhatsApp names, but Alpha Gideon used his real name-his profile picture a plain
forest, like a ghost account.
His name sat there, and beneath it, in small text: Got it, baby.
My brain short-circuited.
Baby? Whose baby? Mine? I didn’t have a baby!
Wait, this is my WhatsApp! Mine!
I called Alpha Gideon “baby”!
My mind exploded like a mushroom cloud.
My eyes went wide, as if a hurricane had hit.
No, no, no! This can’t be real!
I hurled my phone across the room, stumbling backward.
Ten minutes later, I forced myself to accept the horrifying truth.
I grabbed the phone and checked the time.
He’d texted at 1 a.m. I couldn’t tell when I’d replied.
Maybe he’d been half-asleep too, hadn’t seen it?
Sneaking upstairs to steal his phone and delete it was a long shot.
Ugh. But I had to try. It couldn’t get worse.
I deleted my message, scrubbed the evidence, grabbed my bag, and raced upstairs.
When I stepped into the penthouse dining room, three pairs of eyes turned to me.
I forced a tight smile. “Morning.”
Alpha Gideon studied my fresh-faced look, his voice laced with knowing amusement.
“Looks like Vivian slept well.”
Oh no.
His reaction, paired with those dark circles under his eyes, screamed one thing: he’d seen it.

My smile froze.
I darted my eyes away, coughing awkwardly.
“Uh, okay. I, uh, had some wine last night-got totally plastered. My vision was all blurry, ha.”
Alpha Gideon’s face cooled.
“Wine’s no excuse.”
“No, really! Booze messes with my vision, and my fingers-they just… wouldn’t listen. Like I was possessed or
something.”
I scrambled for words, tripping over my own tongue.
Alpha Gideon snorted. “Keep making excuses.”
I floundered.
Leaning in, my voice earnest, almost begging, I said, “It was a slip! I swear!”
Even half-asleep, I’d never call him “baby.” My fingers must’ve betrayed my brain.
Alpha Gideon seemed done with my pleas.
“No need to explain. This time it’s a finger slip-next time, it’ll be your mouth. Can’t own up to it, huh, Vivian?”
His gaze pinned me, like I was some sleazy coward dodging responsibility.
My heart felt ready to give out.
He thinks I did it on purpose?
Did I look like I had a death wish, flirting with him like that?
Elliot and Frank stood there, totally lost.
Hadn’t Vivian said she was going straight to the office?
Why was she here? What the hell was happening?
Alpha Gideon dabbed his mouth with a napkin.
“Vivian, you didn’t come up just to say good morning and whine about a ‘slip,’ did you?”
His hand rested by his phone, long fingers tapping lightly against the table.
My heart skipped with each tap.
Does he know I came to cover my tracks?
“This cake’s amazing. That’s all. Bye.”
