Chapter 75

Alpha Gideon didn’t move.

His deep, striking eyes locked onto me silently.

I avoided his gaze, my eyes darting away the moment our stares met.

He stared at my face; I fixated on his collarbone. Our gazes misaligned.

Seconds ticked by in the quiet room, and he still hadn’t made a move.

My patience frayed.

He’s not expecting me to undress him, is he?

I glanced up, words caught in my throat, unsure how to ask.

Finally, choking on my own hesitation, I blurted, “I’ll help you take it off!”

It was just undressing for a bandage change!

No point dragging it out-better to get it done quick.

I leaned in, hands reaching for his chest.

A soft breeze of my scent brushed Alpha Gideon’s face.

My slender fingers pressed against his chest.

Time seemed to freeze.

Thump, thump.

The loud heartbeat made my pupils tremble.

I’d planned to slip the robe off from the open front, but the moment my fingertips grazed his warm, firm. chest, catching the outline of his pecs under the silk, my senses short-circuited.

“Vivian, what exactly are you trying to do?”

His low voice rumbled in my ear.

It sent shivers through me.

I yanked my hands back. “I’m switching positions.”

Alpha Gideon raised a brow.

“You’re switching positions?”

I wanted to die.

“Not like that! I just meant getting your robe off!”

Oh, that sounded worse!

Alpha Gideon chuckled softly.

“Keep your voice down. No need to get so worked up.”

Worked up? Me?

My face felt like it was about to explode.

I took a deep breath to explain, then realized it’d only dig me deeper.

Instead, I scooted behind him.

Switch positions, as in get behind you!

Take it off from the back, damn it!

Crumbling internally for a few seconds, I forced my mind back on track.

This was about applying medicine!

Changing a bandage! A totally innocent task!

“Vivian, you’re not planning to ambush me from back there, are you?” Alpha Gideon teased.

I let out a dry laugh, no longer hesitating.

My hands went to his neck, deftly slipping under the robe’s collar.

I tried not to touch his skin, but my fingers still brushed his neck, collarbone, shoulders, arms-unavoidable.

The robe slid off his upper body, revealing smooth, pale skin.

Broad shoulders, narrow waist, a glimpse of his V-line dipping below the waistband.

His sculpted muscles were like a statue, radiating strength just by looking.

Behind him, out of his sight, I relaxed, even indulging in a moment to appreciate the “view.”

I looked, but didn’t linger-business first.

Kneeling on the bed, I leaned in, unwrapping the bandage around his waist.

I applied the ointment with a cotton swab, careful and precise.

The cream was too wet, so I instinctively blew on it to dry it faster.

Alpha Gideon stiffened.

His back muscles tensed.

Once it was dry enough, I started wrapping fresh bandages, my hands circling his waist.

“Enough, stop,” Alpha Gideon said abruptly, his voice rough, like gravel in his throat.

His arm and neck veins stood out, stark and full..

I paused, holding the unfinished bandage, confused.

“It’s almost done. Did I press too hard?”

Alpha Gideon’s expression was stern, complicated.

He couldn’t answer, brushing my hand away.

“Get down. I’ll finish it.”

I froze, a spark of anger flaring.

I’d been careful, gentle even.

Why was he still unhappy? This guy’s impossible! Being his assistant is the worst!

Alpha Gideon caught his slip, turning his head, softening his voice.

“Go make me something to eat in the kitchen.”

I wanted to quit right there, but I swallowed it down.

I got off the bed. My knees, numb from kneeling, buckled as I stood, and I dropped to the floor.

Alpha Gideon startled, looking down at me clutching the bed, expression pitiful.

“Kneeling for a raise?”

I glared. “My knees are numb!”

Fuming, I sat on the carpet, rubbing my knees until the feeling returned, then stomped out.

Alpha Gideon sat still for a moment.

Slowly, a smile crept into his eyes.

In the kitchen, I opened the fridge, still steaming.

Tonight, he’d gone too far.

The savior glow was officially gone!

Even if I whipped up a gourmet spread, he’d probably nitpick.

Spotting some fresh rice and leftover stir-fried vegetables, I decided to make a quick fried rice.

I cracked an egg into the pan, tossed in the rice and veggies, and threw together a simple plate of egg fried

rice.

Carrying it to the dining room, I saw Alpha Gideon had left the bedroom and was now in the living room.

“Eating here?” I asked, setting the plate down.

Alpha Gideon stood. “Dining room.”

I thought, Then why sit there? Suppressing my irritation, I moved the plate to the dining table.

Alpha Gideon sat, eyeing the simple egg-and-veggie fried rice. After a pause, he said, “Nice work.”

“You like it, that’s what matters,” I replied, my smile fake, my eyes rolling internally. Sarcasm, huh? Whatever.

Eat it or don’t.

Alpha Gideon said, “I can’t finish this alone. Grab a bowl, split it.”

“I’m not hungry,” I shot back.

No way! I’d come to visit in good faith, and he’d mocked me for being full of myself. I’d changed his bandage with care, and he’d complained.

Now, with these rice, he was predictably poking at me. Did he think I had no spine?

My barely-contained frustration was plain to Alpha Gideon.

He studied me, then said, “I’m sorry.”

I blinked, caught off guard by the apology.

My anger cooled a bit. “If you can’t finish, just leave it.”

“I meant for earlier.”

“Huh?” Earlier? Which earlier?

Alpha Gideon didn’t elaborate, just started eating.

I watched him quietly finish the entire bowl, slow and deliberate.

When he was done, he wiped his mouth and looked up. “Tastes good.”

Fine. I gave up trying to read him.

“If there’s nothing else, I’m heading out.”

I waited for his nod to dismiss me. Instead, he stared at me for a long moment, making me wonder if I had

something on my face.

Just as I was about to ask what was up, he spoke.

“From now on, wherever I am, whoever’s around, don’t avoid me. If you want to come in, come in. And if there’s ever anything between us, I won’t let it turn into gossip.”

His expression was serious, his eyes deep enough to pull me in.

I knew his apology was for those cutting words back in his bedroom the first time I visited

. So what? The sharp-tongued boss had a sudden pang of conscience?

But what did those last few sentences mean? I replayed his words, dissecting every syllable.

It clicked. He was pissed because I didn’t come in-frustrated by my timidity.

As his assistant, I.was overthinking, worrying about pointless gossip.

That made his final words clear: there’d never be anything between us, and he’d make damn sure no rumors

spread.

I felt a twinge of shame. I nodded solemnly.

“Got it. You’re right. If you’re in the clear, there’s no shadow to fear.”

Alpha Gideon stared, speechless.
